Hi!
Version: XnViewMP 1.5.5 64 bit
OS: Linux 64bit
I don't know if this is a bug or if it belongs in the Suggestions section.
But I have noticed that a rating can't be set for images within an archive. As the archive function does not work for versions 1.6.0 to 1.8.7, I have noticed this specifically with version 1.5.5.

Enabling the metadata management of archived images looks an overly complicated and mostly unneeded feature to me, more like a caprice.

I cannot evaluate that.
Only someone who has not yet experienced certain use cases can speak like this. Here are just two of them:
Use case 1:
You get a zip file with lots of photos from an external source. You want to rate the best images and add metadata without having to unzip all the images.
Use case 2:
One would like to summarize one's own photos thematically for reasons of clarity, among other things, without additionally backing up the individual photos. This allows you to archive each topic in a separate file and still tag the best images from it and present them in a slideshow, for example.
Managing images in zip files is simply practical. You have one large file instead of many small ones. It is easier and usually quicker to copy and the images in a zip file are also largely protected against changes. It's so easy to load a photo in an image editing program and press save without making a backup copy of the original file.
So I think it is absolutely not an unneeded feature.
