On Windows, you can use “customize toolbar” via --COMMAND-- to insert a program in the toolbar that opens the selection with the entered command or program. Without a selection, the program opens anyway. Although the logic is also included in the macOS version, nothing happens when you click on the corresponding entry in the toolbar. This is not a specific problem with version 1.8.8, it hasn't worked for at least 3 years (that's how long I've been using XnViewMP under macOS).
I know that you can also open images via “Open with” and that there is a separate menu for the toolbar, but I would like to use the programs via any own icons in the toolbar.

Only without selected a file, it doesnt work? which app do you configure?

Whether with or without a selected image, the app entered is not opened. It doesn't matter which app it is, none of them open. I have tried various image editors such as Acorn, the Affinity apps, but also others such as Forklift or FlowVision.

This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 1.9.0. Please check and confirm the bug fix here.
