Browser - filelist - add statusbar

Post by user0 »

XnViewMP 1.8.6 64bit
Windows11 (24H2), display resolution 3840x2160, win scaling 150%

Browser - filelist
there are few inconveniences with filelist toolbar:
- its overloaded with controls
- addressbar is too compressed
- quick filter should be the at most right place

Suggestion

A
  • add statusbar
  • move controls from toolbar to statusbar
    - left: Sort by, Filter by
    - right: View as, Thumbnail scaling
B
same as A, plus
  • swap controls on the right bottom side
    - View as - should be at the most right position as it affects functionality of Thumbnail scaling
    - Thumbnail scaling - hide it for Icons, List, Details views when it has no effect

digiKam has this habit, buttons all over the place, it requires a lot of mouse movements. While improvements are generally a good thing, I find this one unnecessary and troublesome.

And, perhaps, interface changes could be less frequent, even when they do improve the usage, they are disturbing by definition.

Thank you all for the work and time, be well!

you can change littleBarVersion=1 in your xnview.ini

Bonjour Pierre,

1) même remarques que digiKam
it requires a lot of mouse movements.

you can change littleBarVersion=1 in your xnview.ini

littleBarVersion=1 au lieu de littleBarVersion=0 ...je n'ai vu aucune différence :(

======

1) same comments as digiKam
it requires a lot of mouse movements.
too many mouse (and eye) movements
(I positively hate this distribution above and below the file area, for me, all the functions for modifying the appearance/presentation of this area must (should) be together, with this new layout I spend my time looking to see if the action is up or down, left or right; blurp! )

2) suggestion:
in the parameters:
a- on one line or 2 lines
b- if 2 lines: the 2 lines above the file area or split one at the top and the other at the bottom.

3) I modified as suggested
you can change littleBarVersion=1 in your xnview.ini

littleBarVersion=1 instead of littleBarVersion=0 ...I didn't see any difference :(

I registered on the forum solely to point out what a terrible idea this is. For example, Filter and Quick Filter are now on diametrically opposite sites of the interface window (upper right and lower left, respectively), even though they do very similar things. We can already customize/tidy up the browser toolbar in Settings->Browser->ToolBar to reduce clutter, if needed. So now we are forced to view half of the toolbar's functionality to a completely different part of the screen? Why would we split a toolbar in two and force-locate its contents far away? Also: Status bars are for status indication, not toolbar commands.

Filter options should be together at the top of the interface; that's how filters generally work. There is a very good reason why applications do not have toolbars at the *bottom* of the interface. And now the single Settings->Browser->ToolBar pane lists settings for two completely different toolbars, so some of the enable/disable settings now control items that will not show up *on the actual toolbar*, leading to confusion.

I know that if I see the secret ini setting here in the bugfix thread I can restore the original behavior, but needlessly splitting similar functionally -- and putting toolbar commands in a status bar (!) -- seems like a very poor default.

In other words: This did not need fixing. It is the job of a toolbar to hold toolbar commands, not to them out all over the interface. Look at any application out there -- their toolbars are dense with toolbar buttons/commands. That's why it is a toolbar.

My browser toolbar settings are shown in the attached image attached. I turned off ratings, but almost everything else is the same, and it looks very nice. Edit: I just reverted the default toolbar, and it looks great too. It is not cluttered -- it looks like a toolbar with useful toolbar commands.

Please consider reversing this default behavior. This did not need to be changed.

Bonjour,

issues of single toolbar are listed in the first post, and they are pretty obvious
when all controls enabled - toolbar is a mess
michaelar wrote: Sat May 31, 2025 9:39 pm Also: Status bars are for status indication, not toolbar commands.
it's just a second toolbar positioned in the bottom
michaelar wrote: Sat May 31, 2025 9:39 pm Filter options should be together at the top of the interface; that's how filters generally work.
no. only address bar, its nav controls and quick filter expected be at the top, other stuff is optional

go and check ACDSee, Lightroom, Darktable
chrisncy wrote: Sun Jun 01, 2025 5:14 pm Si on travaille sur un écran 4k comme moi
first, this is English topic/forum section, so use it
second, I'm glad you have 4k, but this is not the case for other users and 1920×1080 should be the primary resolution to fit app UI

so far, I only see lack of customization that can be mitigated by:
- adding functionality to change position of toolbars/buttons
