Updating to latest version of Exiftool

Post by MichaelRyan »

Hi,
My first post. Love XnView MP :D

Summary: where do I get the latest exiftool.exe (v13.32) to replace the version supplied with XnView MP 1.9.2?

TL;DR
I want to update to latest version of Exiftool. I went to exiftool.org and downloaded latest Windows 64-bit 7zip archive and installed the contents in the XnView MP AddOn directory. I renamed the existing exiftool.exe to another name and renamed the newly downloaded 'exiftool(-k).exe' to exiftool.exe. I also placed the Exiftool Perl directory in AddOn. I restarted XnView MP and I was able to see that the latest Exiftool v13.32 was being used by XnView MP. So far, so good.
However, when I started up my laptop the next day, XnView MP would not start. It gave a message about being unable to start up and invited me to send a log report (sorry I didn't capture the exact text of the message). Suspecting the newly updated Exiftool was at fault, I backed out my changes from the previous day and, hey presto!, XnView MP started again without any problems.

I've searched the forum and generally online and can't see any messages on how to do this properly. One problem seems to be that the exiftool.exe supplied with XnView MP is about 10MB in size and the one from exiftool.org is about 55KB. The difference is that Perl is probably integrated into the larger executable? But I can't find an exiftool.exe online that's approx 10MB in size.

Sorry for the very long message! Thanks for any help.

Since the last changes, you also need the exiftool_files folder, like this:

Thanks for replying mudo_j.

I did exactly as your screenshot shows and it did work 1st time but not on a restart the following day.

Glad to know I was on the right track.... I'll give it another go and take a closer look at folder permissions etc this time, just in case it was an access problem with the new exiftool_files folder etc.

Best regards,
Michael
