XnView 2.52.2 on Windows XP

Post by Dave-H »

Hi, I've just updated my installation of XnView 2.51.4 to the latest 2.52.2 on my multi-boot machine.
It works fine on the Windows 10 side, but on the XP side it appears to open fine, but won't load any files.
Even from its own browser, if I try to open an image, I just get a popup saying "Error opening the file xxxx".

Anyone any idea what's wrong here? The download page says that 2.52.2 works on XP.
I've checked everything I can think of, and all the settings seem to be OK.
Cheers, Dave.

Yes, no files will open, wherever they are.

Also, the browser will not generate new thumbnails on XP. It displays existing ones, but any new ones appear and then immediately vanish again.

I didn't mention the first time, but the installer doesn't seem to work on XP now either, saying it's not a valid Win32 application.
I installed it using Windows 10, where it shares the same program files folder as XP. Maybe this caused the issue, but see below!

The installer problem is not unusual now, I've run across quite a few programs which will not now install on XP, but work fine if the portable version is used. I guess the installer is not compiled with an XP compatible compiler (or something!)
Unfortunately, the portable version of the current XnView doesn't work on XP either. I extracted it into a different folder on a different drive to the normal installation, and it still won't open any files on XP.

Cheers, Dave.

Same here.
It starts OK, can paste image from clipboard and even successfully save it to any supported format, but can't open any image!
Previous ver. 2.52.1 worked fine, so something was critically changed in 2.52.2

Thanks, that's exactly the behaviour that I'm seeing!
Good to have it confirmed that it's not just happening on my system.
Cheers, Dave.

Hi, I can't try right now with Windows XP, but I remember I had an error.
Maybe you can try this:

That problem with libwebp.dll on XP I've known about for years.
I always disable the plugin by renaming the DLL file.

Apparently the problem with the installer on XP is known about, and I suspect won't be fixed.
XP users will have to use the portable version if that is the case, I use some other programs with the same issue.
I think it's an issue with the compiler used for the installer, modern ones don't produce XP compatible code.
The other XP issues should be fixed in the next version of XnView Classic.

Good to hear!
:D
I hope as well that the next version will incorporate whatever changes were made so that the program works natively on XP again.
The installer will probably never work again on XP, but that doesn't matter as long as there's a portable version.
Glad to have been able to help.
Cheers, Dave.
