1.8.0 - Multipages and multiresolutions Tiff image isn't well displayed

Post by XavierR »

XnView: MP 1.6.5 & 1.8.0 64 bit
OS: Windows 11 64bit

1.8.0 - Multipages Tiff image isn't well displayed, maybe because each page doesn't have the same size

I downloaded some tiff images from the French Geographic Institute (IGN). Windows viewer shows it without problem but XN View MP doesn't show anything as attended.
https://data.geopf.fr/telechargement/do ... 5_0011.tif
https://data.geopf.fr/telechargement/do ... 5_0012.tif
https://data.geopf.fr/telechargement/do ... 5_0013.tif

Opening it with Gimp, it appears that it's a multipages Tiff (or in the XN View MP catalog). On the first page , it's the full resolution image. Each other page is the small image but with a smaller resolution than the precedent one. And there's 7 pages.

Effect: XN View MP is able to open only 3 of the 7 pages, but no one is well displayed. You have to take another viewer to open this tiff file (as the Windows default one)

To reproduce:
1. Open this file or this one
2. You can see that landscape picture is not well displayed.
3.Try to browse page of the mutipages picture.
4 You can only open 3 of the 4 pages, but none is well displayed.

Actual behaviour (bug): XN View MP is unable to open and show neither the full resolution nor any of the page with a smaller resolution :bug:

Expected behaviour: XN View MP should at least open the the full resolution. But in fact it may be better to open all the pages.

Wow! Thanks you very much for this quick fix.
I'll experiment it when the 1.8.1 will be out.

This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 1.8.1. Please check and confirm the bug fix here.

It's mainly but not fully fixed.

I can open the three first pages on seven without problem. But it failed silently to open 4th to 7th pages.

I tried multipages extract to JPEG with the integrated conversion tool, but it failed in the same way.

I's important to say that' the first page is the most important as it's the full resolution one :D. And this part of the job is well done as other pages are only overviews. But it's also surprising to see that XnView fails to open the 4 littlest images on the seven.

But I guess it won't be long before you'll fix it.

I don't know if it can help but I suppose that these IGN photos are produced with some tool as the gdal utility, through its GeoTIFF driver. Using the gdalinfo command on one of these file, I got this log:

Code: Select all

Absolutely not critical, but situation stays identical with XnView MP 1.9.8.
Is it a choice to get only the 3 first (maybe always the bigger?) ones?

Can you provide a sample TIFF file, attachment size limit 2MiB, otherwise by posting a download link?

Is the TIFF file possibly particularly large?

To clarify, it is possible to step through the eight pages of the first TIFF download, but after page four the images display as black, and pages one to four seem to display the same image.

The first file's properties show it to be a tiled TIFF with JPEG compression, and it seems likely that the higher-number pages would normally be higher-resolution images of the previous page(s). Whether that is true of this file when viewed in fully-compliant viewing software I don't know.

The following 2012 forum post might possibly be helpful:

"TIFF (Tiled)" - what does it mean?.

I disagree. Or maybe it's something relative to my config (but I don't think it's a kind of exotic one).
I can see on the status bar, as I browse the first tiles
1/7, 2/7, 3/7
but I can't go further (4/7 to 7/7)
Are you able to see the fourth and following?

I tried with the PalaisDuLouvre.tif file, but same things occurred (excepted there were only 6 tiles with this file)

Yes, in XnView MP 1.9.3 in Linux Mint, page numbers 1-7 in the status bar, but later pages are all-black, and image pixel dimensions progressively reduce to a low value of 80x58. I think that IGN files can be presumed to normally be valid images  .

So possibly XnView MP doesn't fully support tiled Tiff files. I searched quickly to see if there was another Linux viewer I could test but didn't immediately see one. But strange that you can only see fewer pages.

Interesting to note that XnView comportement is different for bowsing tiles.

It's possible to open these files with Gimp 3 (on Win11, but I suppose it will work on Mint). Each tile can be processed as a layer or an image.

Thanks, I suspected that another software such as GMIP might open them, but it is no longer a default software in Linux Mint.

Meanwhile, if it is any help -- probably not -- I have used XnConvert to extract all pages to a folder that is too large to attach directly.

So it looks as if XnView MP, unlike GIMP, does not fully support viewing tiled TIFFs; you could raise that considering that GIMP does, if you think it worthwhile.
