but, imo, if you use 'Clean metadata' dialog - you want one-window solution where you can clear everything everywhere,
rather than using 'Update catalog from files' afterwards to finally get rid of everything.
Also, remaining overlay icons from Сatalog can confuse people.
I agree that synchronizing with the Catalog should be an option. It is annoying to have to "update catalog from files" afterwards.
A similar issue manifests when using Edit Metadata or Edit XMP/IPTC. You either have to update catalog from files, or browse to a different location then back to get parts of the GUI (like labels) to update, and changing the browse view can be a pain if it is a filter or search.

do you mean silently wipe file's metadata (rating,label,cat,check) from db as well?
what if I want to clean metadata (all/partially) only from file AND leave db intact - pretty valid case imo
