Dividing a group of photos into days or months

Post by Zenon »

Is it possible to make changes to the way photos are catalogued? The change would involve dividing photos into days within a given month or months within a given year, selectable within a given catalogue. This division would be done using a specific line indicating how many photos were taken on a given day or period. I've attached an example!

Greetings to everyone!

Welcome to the forums.

If you look at the Catalog Filter pane, you will see that you can browse images by year/month/day. By shift-clicking you can browse combinations of these.

Thank you for your answer ... but ...

Yes, that's the first step in my suggestion. But after testing this function, I see that the program collects data and shows earlier photos from a different directory, but with the same date. The proposed feature allows for dynamically changing information about photos in a single directory—without any aggregation—one directory selected, with information only from that directory. With the amount of data I have and need to catalog and sort — 4TB —aggregating information is a bit confusing! How could you possibly consider this type of solution?
Best regards.

You tested it? But you think you're limited to the entire catalog instead of a single directory?

Well, if you could possibly just try the existing functionality just a little bit further, you might see that at the top of the Catalog Filter pane there is a menu that allows you to select the scope, "Global" or "Current directory" or "Current directory recursive" (recursive meaning including all subfolders).

The menu's not hidden; it's right there in plain sight.

That allows you to see the photos only in that directory.

There is also a match mode selector (AND/OR) that allows you to combine the selection with other criteria, like rating/color/exif properties.

@ Zenon, jkm is right that the Catalog filter provides all sorts of ways to, well, filter the catalog, including by year, month and day, and this for the entire catalog or any one folder or any one folder and its subfolders.

However, I suspect you're wanting something else. You'll let me know if I'm right or wrong:

I think what your asking for is the ability to display, say, a year's worth of photos but sub-grouped into distinct "boxes," of months or days.

So, when the user searches, for example, "2024," XnView presents a window schematically something like this:

2024

January (5 images)
[picture] [picture] [picture] [picture]
[picture]

February (8 images)
[picture] [picture] [picture] [picture]
[picture] [picture] [picture] [picture]

March (15 images)
[picture] [picture] [picture] [picture] [picture]
[picture] [picture] [picture] [picture] [picture]
[picture] [picture] [picture] [picture] [picture]

etc. etc.

Or, to imagine a month broken down into days:

April

1 April (7 images)
[picture] [picture] [picture] [picture] [picture]
[picture] [picture]

2 April (3 images)
[picture] [picture] [picture]

etc. etc.

Is that correct?

If so, it's something I could get behind, although as a choice maybe, rather than an imposed thing.

And indeed, the Catalog filter currently cannot do that. Searching, for example, a give year only presents a simple window with all of that year's images in it. There is no choice to further sub-divide that window into smaller units.

KLE, I understand what you mean, although I did not infer the same thing as you from what the OP was saying.

I wouldn't be opposed to an optional "grouped" listing per se...

But I do not think it is necessary for XnViewMP to ape the appearance of ACDsee.

ACDsee has the grouped display it does because it needs some way to segregate or limit by date since it lacks the functionality that XnViewMP provides in the Catalog Filter.

It's different approaches to the same problem. The visual indication of date provided by the grouping is inherent in the selection made in the catalog filter.

The ability to restrict by date range is there in XnViewMP, and in a way that is more capable and flexible than ACDsee provides. And of course in XnViewMP you could also sort by whatever date field you wanted, and then display that date field in a label under the image, to make it very clear.
