Hi,
Using Xnview MP 1.9.10 on W11 Pro.
Can not see .CR2 thumnails from Canon Powershot G7 (everythig else works fine as usual). Can open and view image on navigator, but when skip image can not return to CR" images.
Tried to remove from companion, and every possible parameter check and tested, but no success.
Thank you
Carlos

Re: Not show RAW .CR2 " Thumnails (Ghost thumnail)
Since this is a CR2 file, it's not the latest G7 X Mk 3. Those produce CR3 files.
What specific variant of the G7 are you talking about?
I tested a CR2 file from a G7 X Mk 2, which is a 10-year old camera (the original G7 is 20 years old and did not produce raws). The thumbnail displays fine for me. But I'm not sure that's the same camera you're using.
Could you check these two fields in the Exiftool tab and see what you have?
Thumbnail Image
Thumbnail Length
If you don't have valid data there, that indicates there's no embedded jpeg thumbnail in the file.
Can you see thumbnails for those files in any other app?
Have you tried doing a Settings:Catalog:Rebuild Thumbnails on the folder they're in?

Hi Jkm, and thank you for your support.
Is an old Canon G7 X Mark II, same as yours.
Just deleted today the database to test from scratch. No success on CR2 thumnail nor navigate CR2 photos with "skip" on navigation panel.
Thumbnail Image & Thumbnail Length are not present on the CR2 Images. Attached exiting values. I guess if there is no value XNView creates the thumnail, bur there is something misterious here.
I use companion, and hace test to on/of, etc... Same result.
Thank you again.

I'm confused. You say "not present" but "Thumbnail Length" shows in your screenshot.CarlosGT wrote: Fri Feb 13, 2026 9:25 am Thumbnail Image & Thumbnail Length are not present on the CR2 Images. Attached exiting values.
Are you sure the "Thumbnail Image" field isn't present? Type "thumbnail" in the filter box to see.
If there is no "Thumbnail Image" metadata field (or it's empty) then there is no embedded thumbnail in the CR2 file.
What happens if you disable "Use Embedded Thumbnail" in Settings:Thumbnail?

Re: Not show RAW .CR2 " Thumnails (Ghost thumnail)
Dear Pierre & Jkm,
EXIF shows "thumnail lenght", but there is no "thumnail size" on the info. Thumnail sizes are o bytes on database just for the test folders.
Have disabled ""Use Embedded Thumbnail", close, reopen. Samen ghost icon.
If i double click on the ghost thumbnail can open and see the photo on xnview viewer, but can not navigate next/forward.
Have tested on .ARW raw files from a Sony RX100 M6, and same ghost icons.
I have recently updated xnview mp to latest, and installed some new apps (ffmpeg, exiftool, phyton, ....) and uninstaled "Windows photo" because it changes every time my default photo program (Xnview, the one and only). Must be installed any other app to work with CR2?
Tested on another computer with same result.
Thank you!

Re: Not show RAW .CR2 " Thumnails (Ghost thumnail)
clean installation OR you used your settings/db (xnview.ini and xnview.db, thumb.db files)?
if clean - upload your files somewhere and share a link
if you used your settings/db - make backup (if needed) and delete .db, if does not help - delete .ini
eg your Association list is a mess (but it does not cause same issue on my system):
- 2nd rule partially duplicate 1st* ({ext}.xmp;xmp)
- last rule partially duplicate 1st ({ext}.xmp;xmp) and partially ignored (cr2;awr) due to 2nd rule**
* asterisk means all files
** {raw} already includes all CameraRAW formats
there was issue with app registration, which should be fixed in next versionCarlosGT wrote: Fri Feb 13, 2026 10:59 pm and uninstaled "Windows photo" because it changes every time my default photo program (Xnview, the one and only).

Re: Not show RAW .CR2 " Thumnails (Ghost thumnail)
Thank you User0 — the mess was the clue.
I have a custom filter and, when navigating (View → Filter by → All), “Show all” was selected instead of my custom filter (View → Filter → Custom). The weird part is that this filter still affects things even if you don’t explicitly apply it. Just removing “CR2” from that list brought the thumbnails back from the shadows.
About the second “mess”: I only use regular JPGs for compatibility with media slideshows (Kodi on TV), and RAWs from different cameras are stored separately. So first I delete the bad photos (that’s why I use companions — to hide them while browsing/selecting), and after cleaning up I move the CR2/RAW (and now HEIC too) to a new location. I tried to do my best with the companion filter(any suggestions are welcome): Thank you all for your support and for the great work.
