Hi,
I'm trying to find all the photos I took with my Canon EOS IX7. I use the search dialog as shown in the screenshot.
Background: The images I want to find are scans of my analog camera Canon EOS IX7. As the field EXIF:Maker was used by the negative scanner (Nikon COOLSCAN...), I have writen the camera name in the Exif field "UserComment".
I have tried it in different ways with different options, but the output is always "Finished: 0 file(s) found."
No idea what I am doing wrong. For example, when I search the pictures of my iPhone (with EXIF:Maker is Apple), all the matches are listed correctly.
I am thankful for any idea.
Regards
Thomas

Thank you for the quick feedback. So at least I know that I am not completely incompetent.

Re: Search for EXIF UserComment
And you are doing that how, exactly? XPComment is not a selectable field in the search menu, at least not on the Windows version.
Search of "Comment" currently works.
Search of "User Comment" is currently broken, but will be fixed.
You can still search on "User Comment" by searching for Exiftoolvalue UserComment.
Searching the various comment fields using Exiftoolvalue, including XPComment, works correctly, but you may have to do a "Update Catalog from Files" first.

Re: Search for EXIF UserComment
Comment made in windows explorer, so xnview recognize it and shows in adjusted Viewer info window - {EXIF:XPComment} (Image 1 and 2). But cant find image search in 3 variants (image 3). Picture difinetly cashed in catalog (image 4 and 5). Maybe syntax error in filter menu? How to find EXIF:XPComment?jkm wrote: Mon Feb 02, 2026 7:53 pmAnd you are doing that how, exactly? I said in my previous message how to search for it:Banta wrote: Mon Feb 02, 2026 8:36 pm Maybe syntax error in filter menu? How to find EXIF:XPComment?
So if you want to search for XPComment, in the search dialog use the menu to add "ExifTool value", and then in the first field enter xpcommentjkm wrote: Mon Feb 02, 2026 7:53 pm You can still search on "User Comment" by searching for Exiftoolvalue UserComment.

Use the second field for your search term.

Re: Search for EXIF UserComment
It functions correctly as I described. You're having some other problem.
I can't tell what you're trying to show with your screenshots; they seem to be all over the place. What does "XMPSubject" or "lol" have to do with finding a file with "test" in the XPComment field?
There could be any of several problems with your configuration or database.
Show the screenshot of the Exiftool tab, does XPComment show there?
Your last screenshot shows a file with only one metadata tag in it. I can't even be sure the file is not corrupted. Post the file I can test it.
Ensure you're running the latest version of XnViewMP. Ensure you have the Catalog enabled, and that "Store Exiftool fields" is enabled. Ensure your Exiftool path is correct in Settings:Integration:Paths. Restart the app. Then click the "Update Metadata button". Then try a search with "search in catalog only" checked.
If none of that works, try reinstalling the app with a default configuration and no database, import the files, and try the above again.
Good luck...

"What does "XMPSubject" or "lol"" it shows file is fine AND PRESENT IN CATALOG and XNVIEW can find keyword "lol"jkm wrote: Mon Feb 02, 2026 9:37 pm It functions correctly as I described. You're having some other problem.

XNVIEW shows this field both VIEWER info and detailed EXIF info in left bottom little window....need more place where field showd?
"Your last screenshot shows a file with only one metadata tag in it. I can't even be sure the file is not corrupted." you serious?! it happens with ANY image. And i clenup file after first test session - thats why there no keyword field, only comment present.
"Ensure you're running the latest version of XnViewMP." 1-9-10
....etc..... I use this program some years, i know some basics such as importing-exporting catalog, updating it, changing metadata and so on. Just try youself find EXIF:XPComment in filter. Set it from win explorer or direct by "edit metadata" menu xnview.
After some additional testing: purging ini file to default dosnt help, search in 3 interesting EXIF fields: XPComment XPAuthor and XPKeywords finds ONLY XPAuthor. Two others ignored or smthg...

I did, using the exiftoolvalue search. That's how I know it works.Banta wrote: Mon Feb 02, 2026 9:59 pm Just try youself find EXIF:XPComment in filter. Set it from win explorer or direct by "edit metadata" menu xnview.
Ok. I'm sure you'll figure it out then. Good luck to you.Banta wrote: Mon Feb 02, 2026 9:59 pm I use this program some years, i know some basics such as importing-exporting catalog, updating it, changing metadata and so on.
