XnView 1.9.10 Resizing Image parts + Grid lines

Post by XnSoldier »

- Grid lines are annoying. Please give an option to disable in edit window
- Grid lines in white can be confusing, especially on white backgrounds

- resizing those pasted parts of an image gives terrible resizing quality. maybe most visible with b/w graphics not photos. if there is a setting in options why is standard so bad?

This has been moved to the suggestions board, since there weren't any bugs here, just things you wanted changed.

There already is. You're using "Rule of Thirds".

Set the Selection to "Normal" in Tools->Settings:View:Misc:Selection

well, barely visible grid lines I see as a bug.
Also the badly resizing is a bug.

yes, I suggested a possible solution instead of opening another threat. That was on purpose. I hope you can understand that it can make fixing and improving the software more efficient.

thanks for the reference. In no way I would have assumed "selection: Rule of thirds" actually means showing a grid in selections.
I would just name it "grid" within selection

I'm very sorry you were confused. It's surprising. I would have thought a "photographer, sorting 100.000-250.000 pics per year" would be familiar with the "Rule of Thirds" and when they saw the 3x3 division like that would immediately think "Oh, that looks like rule of thirds". And this usage is not unique to XnViewMP.

The naming comports with Adobe's feature as well. If you have ever used Photoshop, it has a feature called "Crop Guide Overlay" that does exactly the same thing when you choose the "Rule of Thirds" setting; it shows a 3x3 "grid" in the selection marquee. I'm afraid calling it "grid" might be less accurate and more confusing, since that is generally expected to mean squares like graph paper. And indeed, in Adobe's software, if you change the "Crop Guide Overlay" setting from "Rule of Thirds" to "Grid" you get a selection rectangle with a lot of small squares that don't change shape as Rule of Thirds divisions must. I think ACDSee has a Rule of Thirds overlay too, at least it used to. XnViewMP lacks the "grid" setting that Photoshop has; but it is free. :)

XnViewMP has a lot of options, and it takes some getting used to. Unfortunately, a lot of it is undocumented as well. Anyway, I hope this helps clarify why it's doing what it's doing. It's also continually being improved, so suggestions are welcome.

Cheers...

I might - in fact - likely have worked with Photoshop 1.0 before you were born. Thanks for lecturing me on rule of thirds. That was not the question here. And not obvious that an option for a grid would have different settings or being named according the it. For me "Grid" would have been the landmark keyword for such an optino. Sadly the programmer couldn't think of "Grid" as a description for a Grid ;-)

So you hint for the option was really helpful. Thus I think for easy access it should be accessible in edit mode directly.

Photoshop. View > Show > Grid.
Using View - Misc - Selection - Rule of Thirds is not really "comporting" as in being similar logic. Kind of its own logic. Why not just mention "Grid" for an option relating to a Grid? :D :D

By UI standards XnView is galaxies away from Photoshop. Sadly. Yet still a great product for its purpose for me.

Nothing new that XnView has it's own logic. Hoping that with my suggestions it can become better and more user friendly for others too.

Ok...

If it makes you feel better to pretend that go ahead, but I was working professionally in technology before Adobe was even founded. I've been a developer so I know what "bug" means, too. Photography since the film days. So I'm a bit too seasoned for your this whippersnapper approach, I'm afraid. Your responses indicate a certain lack of understanding, so I think it's best that this line be dropped.

You're certainly right that XnViewMP is far from PS by UI standards. But PS is a very costly subscription, and XnViewMP is free... And is written and maintained by a single developer, so I think the reasons are understandable. It would be hard to argue that XnViewMP doesn't present well from a value perspective.

The developer is working very hard to improve XnViewMP. Hopefully you've noticed that in the past months, vast strides have been made in the process of bringing the app from a mere viewer/converter to a tool that can provide users with great capabilities to help them organize, find, and manage their images. These improvements are being made with photographers in mind. XnViewMP is not a comprehensive editor like PS or PhotoLab are, but that's ok. It can certainly do a lot more with organizing and finding your images than it could six months ago. Hopefully, as a photographer, you've found some of those new features beneficial to you.

But there's obviously a lot more work to be done, and active development is underway. There are a lot of great things on the roadmap, and suggestions from the user community are definitely considered. Thanks for your feedback.

Cheers...
