When Xnview is started the first time after installation, it starts to build up the new catalogue without asking, which can take hours on my 20TB disks. After I disactivated the catalouge in the program settings, the app did't respond any longer. I waited 15 minutes and then I killed the process in the task manager.
My advise/ my asking:
1. Disable the catalouge feature by default and let users decide to activate it
2. Let the cataloguing procedure run in a separate process at low priority in the backgroud
Thank you.

your start folder contains which file format? All in one folder? The thumbnail process is a separate process already...

Re: v1.10.3 hangs after installation, while cataloguing
Hi Pierre,
sorry it took me a while to reply. My first strategy was to uninstall XnViewMP 1.10.3 and wait for an update. Today I installed v.1.10.5 and had the same issue, but being more patient than last time it seems to work.
What happeed?
On first launch, XnViewMP immediately starts to scan the file system, I don't know for which purpose exactly. The scan seemed to freeze at 52% with the hour glass and not responding for 20 minutes, with no change of the progress bar. This time I let it go for 20 minutes and then it finished and responded again.
Following to your questions/hints:
My start folder I guess is the folder which is is visible in the XnViewXP browser? This is my custom download folder named '$ SAVE AS' and it contains 750 files of which 500 are pictures (jpf, png, webp), the remaining portion ist pdf, url, zip, mkv, mp4 ...). So possiby XnView got stuck with a file type it had no decoder for, but I had no change the change the start folder because the program didn't respond. The reason for starting with this specific folder must have been that this folder was in use by the previously installed version 1.9.2.
Finally v.1.10.5 runs fluent, but the 20 minute hang at first start was an irritating behaviour one would't expect.

Now you have no more the problem??? If you try 'View>Rebuild thumbnails' no problem?cw2002 wrote: Fri Mar 20, 2026 11:48 pm Finally v.1.10.5 runs fluent, but the 20 minute hang at first start was an irritating behaviour one would't expect.

Re: v1.10.3 hangs after installation, while cataloguing
The problem persists:
If I rebuilt thumbnails of my start folder '$ SAVE AS' XnViewMP hangs at 52% as discribed before.
This happens also when the catalog is disabled.
I checked the file handles during the scan and identifed the file which caused XnViewMP to hang:
Please find in the upload a protected PFD file for your further inspection (unzip)!
Personally I need no thumbnails of PDFs, but I found no option to exclude PDFs from being scanned.
Disabling <Settings - File list - Custom filter - I/PS/PDF / Show as Thumbnail> did NOT help.
For me, a solution could be to include for scanning only associated or known picture files.

No problem here to load this file...
Do you have ghostscript?cw2002 wrote: Sat Mar 21, 2026 10:56 am I checked the file handles during the scan and identifed the file which caused XnViewMP to hang:

All files are scanned, this option is only to not generate thumbnailPersonally I need no thumbnails of PDFs, but I found no option to exclude PDFs from being scanned.

Re: v1.10.3 hangs after installation, while cataloguing
Yes, I had Ghostscript v10 (2022) installed. Nevertheless Ghostscript was the solution: After an update to Ghostscript 10.07.0 (current), XnViewMP scanned the PDF file in question without problems.
Thank you for the hint, problem solved.
