1.9.10: Tiny histogram obscures menu bar, doesn't go away

Post by AyeBraine »

XnView: MP 1.9.10 - 64 bit
OS: Windows 10, final 22H2 update

In Browser view, a very small histogram panel is superimposed over the leftmost part of the menu bar. It prevents clicks on the part of the menu bar it obscures (File, Edit, partly View), but you can activate other items on the bar and drag the cursor left to access them. It is interactable with the RMB (you can choose the background and type of diagram). All of this is demonstrated in the GIF. A full window screenshot is also enclosed.

Enabling or disabling "Histogram" option in View has no effect, and the normal, big histogram window does not appear. Other options in the View section don't affect it either.

Effect: User experiences a graphical glitch, access to menus is hindered, also the histogram itself is unusable since it's so tiny and mixes with the menu bar, and the normal histogram window does not work.

To reproduce:
1. Open an XnView Browser window.
Actual behaviour (bug): Histogram is shown on top of menu bar, is very small, and can't be removed or made into a usable histogram window.

Expected behaviour: Normal menu bar and histogram window behavior.

Oh yes, right, could I have messed with something in the custom theme in one of the previous versions and now it conflicts with the new? Although I checked: the theme chosen is default Black, choosing "Custom" enables the default custom theme (not my old custom one). I made sure to restart XnView MP with both themes (Black and Custom), the tiny histogram is still there.

The forum doesn't support attaching .ini files, so here it is in the cloud: https://disk.yandex.ru/d/MQAwldwYQ9omRw

And thank you very much for responding.

there is a strange setting in [browser] of your xnview.ini, please remove 'state', please remove it, and remake your layout...

Hello! I finally did it. I removed "state" section from [browser] in the xnview.ini. Thank you for the tip!

Results:
- On restarting the program, the layout reset (most other options did not).
- The glitch went away, no tiny histogram in menu bar.

New problem (resolved):
- The histogram and the EXIF "mini-panel" were now normal-sized, but seemed impossible to disable via the View menu (see screenshot), only resize. Most default Layouts now had these two "special panels"
- After some experiments, I realized that I can reenable the "Show title of panels" option and close these special panels via "x" buttons.

New, minor issue report:
- Even though my issue was resolved, I'd like to note that other Panels and Info panels can be disabled and enabled via the View menu.
- By contrast, these two special panels cannot be enabled at will, only by resetting to a layout and never closing them.
- I noticed that these two special panels are present in all layouts by default. Exceptions are the two layouts that have "double histograms" by default: one as panel and one as an Info Panel. These are Layout 2 and Layout 5.

I realize this ↑ is basically a non-issue, but decided to note down what I noticed. Thank you for your work!

Additional info:
- In the process of troubleshooting, I also tried removing the "header" section that looked similarly weird to "state", saw no other changes in behavior.
- I also uninstalled XnViewMP (deleting the "Roaming" folder) and reinstalled it. All settings reset, but the behavior remained the same as above.

(Screenshot 1 is example of "special panels"; screenshot 2 is example of special panels in a different layout; screenshot 3 is example of a layout that does not have these panels but has two histograms by default; please disregard "bugged", that was before I realized how to close them)

What seems to be becoming clear is that you have some corrupted configuration files. A clue was the anomalous 'state' setting that Pierre identified. Not clear how that got there. Whether you did something or whether something else did the corrupting for you, I couldn't say.

But the new "issues" you're reporting above don't exist on other computers, just yours. The histogram tab in the info panel can be enabled/disabled with a right click. If you're saying it can't, you have some corruption. That double histogram does not exist in layout 2 or 5 normally. So it sounds like your config is still corrupt, and I wonder if when you think you are deleting it, if you really are starting over as cleanly as you say. Because there's no double histogram with the default configuration. I another thread just now, there was a user who insisted he was closing the Viewer, but it turn out he actually was not. These things happen.

So I would suggest you start over with a totally clean configuration. Delete everything XnViewMP, download the portable app, unzip to a folder on your desktop, and let it generate its own default config files on first run. When it starts, you should get the startup wizard dialog. There should be an option to store settings in "Portable (application folder)"; choose that. If you don't get that dialog and option, then you either haven't cleaned remnants of the old config, or something else is wrong. If you do that correctly, I think you will see you don't have any double-histogram nonsense.
