1.11.2: The ‘Date Modified’ has not been updated correct

Post by ctlu999 »

XnView: MP 1.11.2 [10040] 64-bit
OS: MacOS 26.5.1 - 64bit

Effect: The file synchronization program was unable to detect that the files had been modified, resulting in the incorrect synchronization of the modified files.

To reproduce:
1. Check an Image file with file management for it’s ‘Date Modified’ and ‘Date Created’.
2. In XnViewMP, assign the file with a Rating or a Category.
3. Check the file with file management for it’s ‘Date Modified’ and ‘Date Created’.
Actual behaviour (bug): The ‘Date Modified’ has not been updated.

Expected behaviour:
Update the ‘Date Modified’.
Keep the ‘Date Created’ & 'Original Date/Time'

Almost certainly not a bug.

Almost certainly a user who doesn't understand what's happening.

First, did you actually check the file image file (outside of the app, in another program) to verify the new metadata was actually written? Perhaps the file was not modified at all. It depends on your settings. See Settings:Metadata:Export. If the file was not actually modified, expecting the modification timestamp to change is silly.

Second, did you know changing the timestamp on a metadata write is actually selectable behavior? Check Settings:File Operations:Keep original date/time.

Lastly, are you using sidecar files? If you are, based on your settings, you might be writing metadata only to the sidecar and not modifying the actual image file. This is also selectable behavior. Settings:Sidecar

So check your settings.

You need to stop posting in the bug report forum unless you are CERTAIN you have found a bug. You did this just a couple of days ago, too.

Please post in the MP-General Support forum and ask questions, instead of assuming a bug.

Are you really sure you know exactly what a bug's true meaning is??
The other post you talk about, It is indeed a bug. And it's still a bug now.
(you didn't fix that bug.)

Those settings you mentioned have been selected.

you can do the test by yourself with two method below:

Method 1:
1. Uncheck ‘Keep original date/time : File saving’.
2. Assign a label or Category to an image.
3. Check the image file’s Date/Time outside of the app.

Method 2:
1. (Backup your XnViewMP first)
2. Delete all directory in database.
3. Update Catalog from files.
4. Check the Catalog Filter Panel.

And why don't you do a test yourself first BEFORE contributing so many many many complaints?

(Update and supplement: there is no sidecar been created, the test files I use are .jpg & .png)

I found related articles on Google, and it turns out this is a common phenomenon; developers and users actually have conflicting views on their needs.
reddit: Saving metadata to files changes the Creation and Modified dates. Is this intentional?

Furthermore, I would just like to provide some information for testers: I discovered some incorrect results during my testing because the information on the XnViewMP panel is not always real-time. Often, the panel does not update automatically; you need to switch to another directory and then switch back to see the latest information.,

I've found the cause of this issue.

There is a problem that I didn’t know it before: the XnViewMP’s panel is not always real-time (after chang the Assignment).
So I check all of the date/time in the file list panel with ’Thumbnails + Labels’ in the past.

After confirming that problem, It means that the test results I had done before were a complete mess.
Then do the test again: The ‘File modified date’ is working normally.
