Bad display of avif and jpg xl with HDR

XNviewMP on Mac OS has a problem displaying HDR photos correctly.
I exported JPG HDR, AVIF HDR, JPEG XL HDR from Lightroom.
Only JPG HDR is displayed correctly. In another browser, all photos are displayed correctly.
I have the ICC profile set.
And because the photos are displayed incorrectly not only in the thumbnail preview, but when converting to JPG XL after adding a watermark, they are converted in the wrong display and are already stored darkly and any browser will display them darkly.

I am seeing a similar issue on Windows 11.

I export HDR AVIF images from Adobe Lightroom in the HDR Rec.2020 color space with HDR Output enabled. My display is an LG C6 OLED with HDR enabled in Windows 11.

For the screenshots below, I captured them in SDR intentionally, since Windows HDR screenshots do not accurately represent what is displayed. Even in SDR, the difference between applications is clearly visible.

For example, the AVIF files are displayed correctly in:

Google Chrome (when the file is dragged into a browser tab)
Light Matter v0.1.4

Unfortunately, XnView MP does not display these HDR AVIF files correctly. It appears that the HDR metadata and/or color management is not being handled properly.

I would really appreciate it if HDR AVIF support on Windows could be improved in a future version of XnView MP.

I am not using a custom ICC profile.

After your question, I also tried manually assigning the ICC profile created by the Windows HDR Calibration app (the one Windows uses when HDR is enabled). Unfortunately, it made no difference when viewing the HDR AVIF file in XnView MP.

May I also ask how the sample HDR AVIF images that I uploaded appear on your system? Do they look bright and high-contrast, or do they appear dull and washed out, similar to what is shown in my comparison screenshots?

As I mentioned earlier, after you brought up ICC profiles, I tested several different configurations. I first tried the default settings with "Use ICC profile" enabled, without assigning any additional profile. Then I manually assigned the ICC profile created by the Windows HDR Calibration app. I also tried the sRGB Color Space Profile.icm and several other ICC profiles from the same folder, just to see if there would be any difference.

I restarted XnView MP after each change to ensure the new settings were applied.

Unfortunately, none of these configurations had any effect on the HDR AVIF images.

In that case, it would be great if one of the XnView developers could comment on whether HDR image support is technically possible and whether it is planned for XnView MP in the future.

I also tested JPEG XL. Lightroom can export HDR images as 16-bit JXL, but these files are also displayed incorrectly in XnView MP. However, they display correctly in the Windows Photos app when the JPEG XL extension is installed.

At the moment, HDR AVIF images seem to display correctly only in Chromium-based browsers (such as Chrome and Edge) and in Light Matter. It's a bit inconvenient to use a separate application just for viewing HDR AVIF images.

HDR AVIF support would already be a huge improvement. If HDR JPEG XL support could also be added in the future, that would be fantastic.

On my system, JXL HDR also looks a little better than HDR AVIF in XnView MP when Windows is running in SDR mode. However, the Windows Photos app displays the colors much closer to how the image looks in Lightroom before export.

When both Windows and my TV are switched to HDR mode, XnView MP still appears to display the JXL image within an SDR range, while Windows Photos displays it correctly in HDR and preserves the full highlight detail. Unfortunately, I can't demonstrate that particular difference with SDR screenshots because of the limitations of SDR captures.

Besides not displaying the HDR image correctly, the colors in XnView MP also differ from Lightroom even when viewed in SDR.
