[Feature Request]Display name of object to be deleted

Post by peterfalk »

When deleting an object, e.g. a folder from the folder view in the side panel, the confirmation dialog is only asking if we are sure to delete this folder. However 'this folder' is not clear and can be any folder that has been accidentally clicked.
The dialog should display the name of the item that is going to be deleted.

How is it not clear? The folder that was clicked is highlighted on screen.

The only way it's not visibly highlighted is if the user clicks a folder to select it, scrolls it off the screen, doesn't click to select something else, and then hits the delete button.

If the user is unsure as to what they're deleting, then "No" is the appropriate response.

Displaying the name for a single item is more "friendly", but is there some usage scenario where this change is crucial?

'This' can be anything.
One accidantal click and the confirmation dialog is not worth anything.

Furthermore when I select a folder in the side panel it gets highlighted in blue. Once the confirmation dialog pops up the highlighted area vanishes resp. turns transparent. It is still there but less visible.
The width of the sidepanel also does not necessarily cover the entire name.

I am coming from Windows. When I delete folder ABCDES it asks me politely if I want to delete Folder ABCDEF. That's good practice and really leaves no doubt if the correct folder has been selected. It is much safer.

Sorry, but that's nonsense. Again, if you're unsure, answer No. That is the whole point of the dialog. I'm not opposed to adding the name, although ambiguity will still remain when multiple items are deleted. But the hyperbole is not helpful; to say the existing confirmation dialog is worthless is just not true. More measured statements will be more effective for you.

FYI, this coloration is theme-specific. You must be using the "Default" theme. And it's wrong to say it "vanishes": the highlighting in that theme doesn't vanish, it goes from blue to grey. If you are vision-impaired so that grey is not easily visible to you, I suggest you switch themes.

If you switch to a different theme, the highlighting will remain blue. You can also switch to the custom theme and modify it as you like. :)

You are free to to disagree. Even Windows Explorer shows me the name of the item in the confirmation dialog. This is clear and safe. There is not really a reason not to display it. When more than 1 item gets deleted you are correct, it Windows Explorer will ask if n items shall be deleted. But it is still better this way than the way of xnviewmp now. Here I can say Windows Explorer does one thing right.
