[Feature Request] Additional date options Special items.

Post by peterfalk »

Existing date options for Special Items are
  • EXIF: Date taken
  • EXIF: Date modified
  • File: Date modified
No other date options are available.
My request is to add additional options:

- File: Date created
- File: Date last accessed

Additional ideas are welcome.

Welcome to the forums, Peter... That's a lot of suggestion posts for your first day posting. :)

You're actually conflating two different things here: Special Items, and the Date tree. The properties you're referring to are for the Date Tree, not Special Items.

"Date Created" could be added. It's not there because the Catalog Filter is intended to be about EXIF metadata. Date Taken is more durable than Date Created, since the latter can change automatically based on filesystem actions. Upon file creation, Date Modified is set equal to Date Created, so having Date Created separately available would only be beneficial when files lack EXIF Date Taken metadata, but are nonetheless being otherwise modified. Best practice would be for users to rely on metadata rather than filesystem data for organization.

"Date Accessed" would not be productive to add (at least on Windows systems) because that filesystem property is not reliable, and allowing it to be used would generate too many support requests about it not working.

Date Created would be reasonable to add as a mode to the Date tree.

Hello and thank you.

You are correct, I had hat the Special Items expanded and the date item appeared to me as subnode of the Special item node. It is not. It is a node on its own.
But my suggestion remains. Date accessed would create a nice dynamic way of sorting. Date created is also an option already as column in the browser. At least this shall be available as option.

Like I said, "Date Accessed" is unreliable and would not be productive, so don't hold your breath waiting for that one. :)
