Can not clean or save edits to keywords

On macOS Tahoe, using xnViewMP ver 1.11.5

xnViwMP will not "clean", nor save edits to some (perhaps all) files. Keywords originally came from Adobe LrC and have since been modified by other apps, but in xnViewMP, nothing "sticks".

I try to check or uncheck an item in "Categories" and it appears to work until I look at that file again. Same result with menu "Metadata-Edit XPM (or IPTC).

Other software do not see the particular categories that appear in xnViewMP that I am trying to modify, so perhaps these fields are in an area of the metadata file that xnViewPM "sees" but can not edit. As I said, other software do not even "see" these particular fields, so I am hoping someone with a better technical understanding of this issue has suggestions.

Thanks for the offer to examine a photo for cause. It turns out that I may have discovered the issue! I have determined that a lot of early photos (all jpegs) had xmp sidecars, as well as embedded data...so deleting the sidecars and editing just the files themselves seems to solve the problem.

I will need time to work through the full folders of photos, and will resubmit the problem if there are other issues.
