1.11.5: A folder that has just been renamed in XnView MP still has an old name in Folders tree

Post by Aidar »

XnView: MP 1.11.5 - 64-bit
OS: Windows 11 - 64-bit

When one renames a folder in Folders tree in XnView MP (both with and without “Use dialog to rename file/folder”) sometimes a folder is actually renamed (as seen in Windows Explorer) but still has the old, un-updated name in Folders tree in XnView MP.

Usually renaming is like “2026_07_05” -> “2026_07_05 One Lecture”.

The problem with old name in Folders tree is twofold:
1) One does not know if the renaming has worked (sometimes it does, sometimes it does not).
2) XnView MP cannot view the contents of the folder with the old name (because it does not exist anymore), so when one moves from some other folder to this one in Folders tree, the files from that other folder remain in the right panel.

One can see the effect on the screenshot:
2026-07-28-Rename.jpg

a) On the right – Windows Explorer with the folder “2026_07_05 O” that has just been renamed in XnView MP
b) On the left – XnView MP Folders tree with “2026_07_05” old folder name that has just been renamed in XnView MP, but is not properly updated in the Folders tree
c) In the middle – a picture from “2026_07_04 B” folder, because when one moves from existent “2026_07_04 B” to non-existent “2026_07_05” the contents of the right panel continue to display files from “2026_07_04 B”.

The seemingly simple folder renaming issue does not always reproduce:
I) Sometimes everything works perfectly
II) Sometimes folder is not renamed at all
III) Sometimes folder is renamed properly (as viewed in Windows Explorer), but is not updated in XnView MP Folders tree

A robust workaround that I have been using for some months across many XnView MP builds is to always use Windows Explorer for renaming folders.

Restarting XnView MP updates the Folders tree, so after the renaming is finished, one can comfortably use XnView MP to view the photos collection in a static Folders tree.

Thanks.

Do you reproduce often?

Yes. I would say whenever one needs to rename 10+ folders, which correspond to 10+ days, this bug reproduces multiple times. So much so that I am using Windows Explorer because of this issue. LongPathsEnabled that is set and used on my Windows 11 (with all latest updates) may or may not contribute to this.
