Slow response time, freezing (Ubuntu/Cinnamon)

Good evening all,

I'm new to this forum, so please excuse any inaccuracy in my descrpition and feel free to aks for more specifics.

I've just recently moved from Windows, where I "passionately" have been using ACDSee Ultimate for organising and editing my photographs.
I have stored quite a signifcant number of RAW files and their edited JPGs on a NAS with Gbit ethernet connection.
In ACDSee, once the files were scrubbed, I appreciated the fast access and smooth browsing through all my folders.

Now with XnView, which also allows me to keep using a folder structure to browse my images (instead of forcing me to use albums), I experience quite a lot of lagging when I move between folders (with admittedly large numbers of well-sized images). Sometimes it even freezes/time-outs. Even scrolling in the left-sided folder tab and accessing the menu sometimes does not work or lags respectivley. I always make sure that I have a stable ethernet connection.
Am I just being impatient and should I simply wait until XnView has scanned all the numerous folders to populate its database? Is there a way to see how much of the folders have been scanned? Does scanning - if at all - automatically cover every folder or just the ones that I happen to open?

It seems that the network connection on my laptop causes the trouble - when using a different machine (within the same network), I do have significantly shorter lags.
So I guess I will have to work that out...
