Make special small images for - video, audio, text, other files and subfolders (or use system default icons) and show these images as '4in1' thumbnails if they are in the folder. Only if no (or just one/two..) images are there. Show just one icon/image per (file) type.

I'd rather support 4in1 thumbnail creation according to current filelist settings (regarding file types display and thumbnail creation).
For example if settings define that in filelist there are images, sounds, and video shown, in 4in1 we could have a thumbnail for image, sound (build in icon) and video.
4in1 should work as a preview for what we would see after entering the folder with current settings.

Yes, but how do you distinguish what is image/video/pdf?
And - I want small images/icons also for subfolders and non-image files (e.g. txt, exe...). Currently there is no information that folder is not empty and there are subfolders/non-image files inside. I think these icons should be not too colorful, to be clear.
BTW - Creating thumbnails from video and PDF files is much longer that from images, so if they would be created also if there are also images there, it would be too long.

Why "too long"? if you have just a few folders with a few pictures inside and never cache anything, generating thumbs on the fly each time, that may be true, but how many people really do that? I believe that as soon as you start managing a few hundred files and have both stills and video, you 1. cache thumbs and 2. want to see thumbs for everything; at that point, also, you'd really like a way to thumbnail a full folder tree instead of being forced to browse manually each subfolder for thumbs to be created... in such a scenario, which I believe is very common, it wouldn't matter how long it took to create thumbs for video and PDF, especially if it were a background thread doing that. Also, creating thumbs is almost a "one-time" job, sice after a folder has been thumbnailed, every subsequent visit to it probably would need to do nothing, or just manage a few changed images or some added ones.
