Suggestion for new version

Post by Walt Palmer »

Great to have v1.74 - thanks! I have an idea for next version (soon, I hope):

1) Could you make XNVIEW read the orientation flag and rotate the thumbnails to correct view? I handle 1200-1500 images from each job and my neck gets sore constantly trying to see the vertical images. I don't mean to be rude, but you can see what I mean by looking at how the latest Irfanview version does it.

XnView 1.74 can rotate the images to correct view, already.

Automatic rotation
By default, the automatic rotation is disabled, to enable it you have to check "Rotate images based on EXIF orientation" in 'Tools > Options', category 'Read'. After activation, XnView rotate the preview and the images in view mode. The thumbnails are not rotated so that you can see the actual orientation of each image.

Permanent rotation
Also, you can rotate permanently the images based on the EXIF information. This will ensure that the images are oriented properly when viewing in any graphic programs. To do this, you select all your images and select "Tools > JPG Lossless tranformations" (or dropdownlist of symbol 'JPG lossless transformations' in toolbar).

The rotation is lossless so quality is not affected. Make sure that you keep the checkbox "Reset EXIF orientation value" when rotating permanently. Otherwise XnView will rotate your images, again.

Some important hints:
After activating the automatic lossless rotation, your old images might not be rotated properly. The reason is that these images have been rotated without reseting the EXIF orientation value.

To correct this, you select all (!) your images and choose Tools > JPG lossless rotation. In the dialog you activate the checkbox "Reset EXIF orientation value" and confirm the dialog with "OK". The orientation value will be reset this way and these images will not longer be rotated.

I've got a problem with this function under Gentoo using v1.70 / 4.51:

a) by default all pics are shown in correct orientation in the picture browser (=> EXIF information seem to be interpreted correct). The oics with wrong orientation contain a little arrow symbol next to the EXIF symbol

b) But to auto. permanently rotate all pictures in the correct orientation I seem to miss the function you posted above. Selecting all pics, going to tool - JPG Lossless tranformations menu is easy but where next ?
The window pop'ing up contains no "Reset EXIF orientation value" checkbox and I can only rotate ALL images either vertically, horizontaly or 90 / 180 / 270 but this affects all selected images. I miss an option like "orient all pics acc. EXIF information"....
Is this missing in the 1.70 Linux version ?

Hmmm... looking at more threads in the forum and doing a test on windows I'm quite (HEAVILY) surprised. The win version seems to have tons more functions, also the one I'm looking for to autorotate pics. Not that I'd like to use the win version...
