Location of wallpaper file

I've noticed that the location of the wallpaper is in the My Documents folder and upon experimentation if you change or delete the file it will effect the wallpaper. Change it and the wallpaper will be changed when you refresh, delete and it will disappear when you refresh. Perhaps it should be placed back into the Windows directory.

Being that the changing of the wallpaper can be had by naming a different file with the name [ xnview wallpaper.bmp ], could it be possible with the use of a batch file, to cycle the wallpapers, either automatically, or sequentially? I know the deluxe can do screensaavers, but I'm not sure about being a wallpaper manager. I was thinking of perhaps using Task Manager (a feature I have never used before) to execute a batch file at a given time, the batch file would create a listing of files that could be used, then input as a variable one line (file path) to be used by Xnview, or to rename as [ xnview wallpaper.bmp ].


The only problem with that is when you rename/SaveAs the file, it does not get displayed at best fit, rather centered. Would it be possible to ad that (best fit) as a commandline option, or how could that be implemented via the SaveAs process?

I like the wallpaper being in the "My Documents" folder system, it follows the same system IrfanView uses, it's more dynamic for multiple users.

That may be, but how much more likely would it be deleted if in the My Documents directory than in Windows. Chances are you move files around alot in My Documents, delete this, change that etc..., but unless you have a need to get into the Windows directory, chances are it will stay safe and untouched, though still accessible.

A workaround for this personal bug is to set the file as hidden that way it won't get deleted if I happen to do a vast file sweep.

I would like to bring this thread back to life, as I would like to see XnView store wallpaper here:
\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\XnView
instead of
\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents

To me, it just makes more sense.

Also a different more intelligent naming system like "xnview_wp_20041204.bmp" that way you have backups of old wallpaper as well. Actually make it dynamic so you can have "XnView's version number" Data, Time, the letters "WP" Added or Removed from the filename.

What's the XnView version number good for?

Wallpapers piling up shouldn't be a problem these days with storage being cheap but if it is, maybe XnView can keep 3-5 wallpapers and cycle them on that basis.

The version number is just something I would like, for me it's logical and structured.

Wouldn't it be better to let the user decide??? Just give him/her the option, that's it! And I personally agree that storing wallpapers in the My documents folder is a bit "unsafe" and might cause some frustration with unexperienced users. Documents And Settings/Application Data is a more clean and neat way for storing wallpapers (IMHO). Good luck.

a - The wallpaper is user specific.
b - The wallpaper should be settable by any user.
c - The active wallpaper cannot be used by other applications except Windows, since other applications will not be able to use it.

a.) and b.) clearly point to \Documents and Settings\<username> or one of it subdiretories.

I'm not sure whether c.) really applies. If yes, ..\Application Data\XnView is the right place to store. If no, ..\Application Data\XnView is still a good and safe place and should be used until someone has a good reason against it.

Or perhaps a better place would be, at least in 98/98SE:

[C:\WINDOWS\WEB\Wallpaper]

Or whichever flavor of OS the user has. Perhaps a choosable path wherein one could have the wallpapers?
