Slow redraw of browser when switching back from view mode

When switching from view mode back to the browser, XnView redraws the browser window very slowly (> 1 sec). I see a fragment of the image I had been viewing where the folder list should be, then it redraws the folder list. Next the toolbars and thumbnails are redrawn. This gets progressively worse the more files are in the folder, but I've seen it with as few as 400.

I would consider this a general performance problem rather than a bug except that it does not happen while the thumbnails are being populated -- only once the thumbnail list has been completed for that folder (i.e., the lower-right progress bar while building thumbnails is gone). Since the switch from view to browse is seamless up to 99% done building thumbnails, it seems like a bug that at 100% it gets slow.

This happens with caching on and off. Interestingly, it does not happen if I view full-screen, only when I view windowed. I can also make it stop by turning off the options to "Auto Refresh" and "Synchronize Browser selection with current View," but that hurts functionality alot. Bug or no bug?

I have double-click mapped to switch between browser and viewer. I have also tried using the <enter> key just in case the mouse is a factor, but it does the same thing.

Win XP SP2, Athlon 3200, 1 GB RAM...

Have you tried it with a folder with lots of files? It isn't discernible until a few hundred for me, but to get the 1+ second redraw I need nearly 2000 files in the folder. Again, though, what gets me is that it works fine switching back and forth the whole time it is creating thumbnails, then once it finishes creating the thumbnails it gets slow. I'm stumped.

Strange, for me switching between viewer and browser is very quick…

- Same here for me under XP-Pro¦1.82 RC3. It's even a bit the opposite : with the 2-click, thumb-nail —> View is slightly slower, let's say around 0.4 s.
Not a big deal, though, I can live with…

• Tested with a 2.80 MB JPEG. “High quality” thumb-nail preview IS used.

Actually, that option was already disabled. I use the thumbnails as my preview, so I don't have the preview pane even enabled. Even so, the "high quality" option is unchecked.

Could a bug with my video driver cause something like this? I'm running the latest drivers from ATI.

• You could try to decrease the colour-depth of the display, that could help.
- For instance, if you are using :
32 BPP —> 24 BPP
24 PBB —> 16 BPP

- High BPPs are very greedy at video-RAM…

I would cry if I had operate at a lower color depth. Just the same, I did test it for the sake of thoroughness, and it does the same thing at 16-bit color depth. My ATI card has 256 MB of DDR3 RAM, so I doubt video RAM is my problem. If anything, maybe a bug in the driver, but since everything works fine until the tumbnails finish generating, I'm skeptical about that.

This issue seems to be resolved with the 1.82 build I just downloaded. I'm not sure if it's changes from the previous version to this one that fixed it or if it was the simple act of reinstalling. Either way, I'm now moving from viewer to browser at a very nice pace. Thanks!
