it might look good on light backgrounds, but it will lock awefull on dark ones and vice-versa.
the "page" was an alternative to not using a plain background, for example, check photoshop's main icon, it has some sort of page on the background too.

No way? for me, true, I'm not a graphics professional, but if you have just a quick glance on the net there are TONS of professional-looking icons with transparent (I'd say alpha-blended currently under XP) background and completely irregular shapes.
