I know that ACDSee does the same and I hate it, because I destroyed the color information of 1000 pictures by just rotating them with ACDSee.
Couldn't you warn the user if he loads a picture for editing with 16 bit color depth?
Also the information displayed when the cursor is over the picture symbol tells me there are 24 bits per level, even if there are 48 bits. (Yes I am sure, there are 48 bits, PhotoShop tells me there are 16 Bits per color and the file has twice the size of a 8 bit file)
By the way another question: Why is the menu item Edit->IPTC data deactivated for my TIF file, even if the IPTC icon is shown? (Maybe you try to protect my colors
