Managing descriptions in descrit.ion file

Post by RSC »

If any file is renamed (both in view or browse mode), its description should be kept for the new file name as well. In the current version, the description is lost. Similar problem (the loss of decription associated with any file) happens when I copy or move a file into another directory using drug and drop or CRTL+C and CTLR+V.

No any replies? I found this subject very importart. It is really bad when we lose description after every minor management with any file. Actually for users that use description system and don't have files quite static, i.e. work with them and sort them from time to time, it makes working with the programme extremely difficult. I am convinced the solution of this problem is very much needed.

:) Hello !

• Cool... I had to test and compare ;)

- When moving a file which have a comment in a <descript.ion file>, the file is copied in the new target-folder.
- If you rename the file, the comment is not displayed, right.
- This could be fixed I guess… For example, in Total Commander, we have these comments, and when one renames a file, the comment is updated…

 Kind regards,

descript.ion support

Post by toni »

In respect of the descript.ion support, when you move or delete a file, the line in the descript.ion file present in the original folder is not deleted.
I am very interested in the good support for the descript.ion files as I have thousands of images catalogued using this files (with acdsee), but the new versions are very bad.

Thank's

Hm, in 1.9alpha3 the description is only updated when I change the description of any other file in the source folder after moving -- when I just leave XnView after moving, I'll have incosistent information -- not that big problem, but still a bug. Pierre, could you invoke descript.ion cleaning function directly after moving (shall be not too hard to implement), or due to efficiency, to keep a list of descript.ion files that will be cleaned on exit?

Maybe http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?t=1231 is relevant as well; my french isn't good enough to get the details.

Bugs ansd row

Post by Clo »

:) Hello !

• Roughly, the French poster says that the <descript.ion> is not correctly updated,
and moved only with the "Move to…" commands if needed, others means don't.

- Pierre confirms they are :bugconfirmed:

Aside : about this (antiquated 4Dos_4NT) feature, there is a nice row HERE, read only… :P
- The thread contains interesting info about the specifications, it goes further than the original title says…;)
