Crash

First off, hello forum.

I'll be fast and clear. XnView doesn't seem to like folders containing massive numbers of images and tends to crash on me if I attempt to open them (it will kind of freeze for a few secs while displaying nothing, then trying to close the program makes XP report it's not responding hence I'm forced to finalize the task)

I have around 6200 3.3MP jpeg photos in a single folder, among other small video files (and I have already disabled every possible form of preview or cache as a last resource, still no luck).

I really, really like XnView but now, considering the problems I'm having with it, I feel like switching back to ACDSee Classic (which renders images a way faster anyways) for regular viewing, although I'd still be dependant on XnView for minor editing and format conversions.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. And yes, my HD is damage free, well defragged, no useles services, AV or trash is running in the background, my registry is clean and my 3.2ghz-1024ram-GT 6600 256mb shouldn't be a bottleneck for this program, at least technically...

Could you try without cache enabled?

It is due to the fact that all thumbnails are loaded in RAM. Check this thread. The solution requires to change the Thumbnail cache to a real DB system and load only displayed Thumbnails (there is also a performance hit ), as Pierre explained here.

Your 6200 Thumbnails will take in RAM: 6200 x [Thumbnail Width] x [Thumbnail Heigth] x 3...
=> with 1GB, you should try 128x96 Thumbnails to be safe.
=> of course, you can also separate those 6200 files in different folders.

Did any of you actually bother reading what I wrote about thumbnails (preview) and cache?

Still, I must note that it happens when I open the pics outside the XnView's browser.

Yes: you said Preview not Thumbnails.

To test this Thumbnails issue quickly: start XnView Browser, select View>View as>list.
=> do you still have that Crash, then?
