How to burn to external DVD drive

I have just recently discovered XnView and it works like a charm – there is one thing : I'm creating a slide show and wants to burn it to a USB-dvd burner, but the only drive recognized is the internal CD-burner. Would it be possible to burn to the DVD.

Is it normally possible to burn any kind of data DVD with that Nero version and your external device?

Thanks for Your answer. I have dived into two :
1. A CD with the slide show
2. A DVD with all the original photos on.

(it’s large collection of very old slides for my family)
