Easy, select the JPG file -> Choose "Batch Convert" -> Choose "Transformations"-> Choose "Convert To Colours" set to "256" and pick BMP for output.

You can use Batch Conversion for one or multiple images (described by ckit in previous post). For converting a single image, you can simply open the image (double-click on thumbnail) and perform the following steps:

1.) Menu "Image > Convert to Colours > 256 colours (Adaptive)"
2.) Menu "File > Save as..."
3.) In "Save as..." dialog choose format "BMP Windows Bitmap".
4.) Choose output folder (if desired). Save image by pressing "OK".

Note:
You will find more infos on Batch Conversion in FAQ "How to convert several images at once" and in the XnView Online help.

I think he's saying that the BMP format isn't showing up when he tries to save.

Are you using a very old version?
With v.1.80.3, look for Options>Write>File Types and select [x]Windows Bitmap
With older versions, look for Options>File Types and select [x]Windows Bitmap
