XnView crashes whenever I view an image

Post by leuce »

This error occurs on XnView 1.82.4 (but it occured on my previous installation as well, which version number I can't remember). My OS is Windows XP Pro SP 2.

Every time I view an image in XnView, it crashes after a second or two. It used to happen only if I double-click on an image inside an e-mail, and I was able to work around it by first opening XnView and then dragging the image to the XnView window... but now it even crashes when I do that. I'm using IrfanView until I can get XnView fixed.

This happened on my previous version of XnView too, so I uninstalled it completely and removed all entries in the registry that even mentions XnView and deleted all XnView folders from my hard disk, hoping to get a "clean" install, but the problem persists even with this latest version.

I won't be surprised if this is not strictly an XnView issue, though, but it would be nice to sort it out nonetheless.

Thanks
Samuel

So you open a picture from an email attachment, and view it. Nothing else?

It happens when I double-click an image on my desktop, and it happens when I open XnView and drag an image to the XnView window.

Sometimes a couple of seconds pass before it crashes. Sometimes it crashes within one second.

Okay, I seem to have solved it. I installed XnView 1.80.1 without uninstalling XnView 1.82.4 (although, strangely, the About box still says "1.82.4" even though I installed the older version over the newer one.

I tried other combinations, but it seems that 1.82.4 doesn't stop crashing unless I install 1.80.1 after I've installed 1.82.4. Weird...

My XnView 1.82.3 crashes sometimes (Win XP), when I go through several pictures in full-screen-mode! Why that?

Hi,

I have installed the latest release of XnView. When I double-click on a picture to open it (jpg, but also with other formats), it correctly opens in XnView, but shortly afterwards I get the following Crash message:

XnView for Windows 9x/NT/2000/Me/Xp has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

The data of the error report contains:

AppName: xnview.exe AppVer: 1.82.0.0 ModName: xnview.exe
ModVer: 1.82.0.0 Offset: 00154a5f

:bug: ???

Several tests I have made...

Post by jcberens »

Hi,

May be this could help you...

I have tested with several files, but always when I open a file by double-clicking it (in Windows Explorer or in Total Commander) XnView crashes shortly after displaying correctly the file. I have even uninstalled XnView and deleted several keys in the Registry to be sure to have a fresh new installation before doing these tests.

When I open the XnView Browser and I close the browser window by double-clicking on the browser tab, and then drag-and-drop a picture in the empty XnView window (parent), it opens the picture without crashing. The problem seems only to be in relation when opening a file by its association with XnView (double-click in Explorer).

I hope this can help...

Jean-Claude

And if you open the browser of xnview in the same folder?

As soon as the application is open, I can browse through all my images and open all of them without problem. The problem occurs only when I open a file by double-clicking it from within explorer. This occurs even when another instance of xnview is already open.

I have now downgraded to version 1.82.2. This version works fine.

Really??? Very strange. And if you disabled option/View/Cache ahead & behind?
Other users with same problem?
Pierre.

I have just installed the latest version (1.82.4) in the office and I have the same problem. It does not "always" crash, but 9 times from 10. I did not find this option. Could you tell me more precisely where to find it.

You are right! By disabling this option, XnView does not crash anymore on my PC... I suppose this will help you to solve the problem in further releases.
