Use embedded picture to preview RAW

Post by JohnLakkas »

I am not really sure but I thing many RAW files include a somewhat big image (something like half dimensions of the RAW data itself) maybe embedded jpg. Could you find out and not only use embedded picture for thumbnail but also in the view mode (as an option)? That would make viewing RAW files A LOT faster!!! And if someone wanted to convert RAW files then to use the RAW data. Is it easy/possible?

I own a Canon EOS 350D (8MP) which creates CR2 raw files. I know that XnView uses embedded thumbnails in the browser. But I wonder if there actually is embedded higher resolution image (~half dimentions). I thing that Photo Mechanic does that without using the actual RAW data at all (http://www.camerabits.com/). Also IrfanView has this feature as an option. Which opens the RAW file so faster. The embedded preview size in irfanview is 1536x1024 (original RAW image data size: 3456x2304) (I hope that helped).

I forgot to mention that I do already use embedded thumbnail in Camera RAW files.

Statistical details that may be intresting:
6.72 MB CR2 RAW file (in irfanview) view loading time
191 milliseconds (using embedded)
5558 milliseconds (loading half size RAW)
24526 milliseconds (loading full size RAW)
(the times as shown in the properties window)

NOTEBOOK
P4/256MB RAM-64MB FOR THE VGA

In Options/Browser/Preview, you can choose the resolution

Actually I messed up things a little. The previous discussion and the times I mentioned above are for view mode not the preview in the browser. The times which I gave before are the times needed to view the RAW picture (in main viewing window in irfanview NOT in the thumbnail browser). I asked about higher resolution embedded image in order to appear in the view mode. This it hasn’t got to do with the thumbnails nor the preview (nor with the way creating the preview image).

So in fact, you want the same setting for view mode too?
Pierre.
