Can I limit the number of open tabs / pictures ?

When I double click on a thumbnail in the browser tab the clicked picture is displayed in full size in another tab.

Is there a way to limit the number of open, displayed pictures/tabs (in full size)?

No, but you can limit to only 1 tab (only 1 tab opened)

Where can I limit the number of open tabs to 1 ?

I did not found an appropriate setting for this

Check 'Only one view opened' in Options>View.
