Possibility to whiten part of image to save ink of printer

Is there any possibility to whiten selected part of image? Currently there is possibility to delete unwanted part of image, but this part stay black. Option to change this color after delete would by great. Some possibility is using of contrast setting, but it is very imperfect and do not function with greyscale images (only color images).

Did this (getting a "select color for deleted area") ever happen? When one edits an image for printing and deletes portions of the image, having them print as huge black blocks on the page is not good. I agree with Guest who asked for option to make the deleted area white instead of black.

If Pierre creates an option to make the deleted area ANY color, then you should change the function name from "delete" to "fill," and perhaps force the user to pick a fill color before drawing the selection box.

If this is already done, thank you. If not, please consider, even though "fill" is more of a paint-program feature than a general purpose image editor like XnView.

- What about “Delete (selection?) & Fill” in the menus, with just below an entry like “Choose the Filling colour…” ?
• BTW :  Some minimal painting retouch features have been promised a long while ago, still in the limbo till today

Thanks for the interesting and informative reply.

I would suggest a minor change to the wording you have proposed. Rather than "Choose the filling colour", it should be the "fill" colour. Although "filling" it is technically correct, we American English speakers use the word "filling" for stuff that goes into a pie or into a tooth cavity! I don't know if this is true for British English speakers.

I'm glad to hear that other users think that the FILL is a good idea.

Already available in a way....
Select a portion of the image, hit SHIFT+E, turn contrast all the way down and everything else all the way up, selected area is now white.

The black area in the pic was the result of selecting an area and then hitting delete, the white area is a result of the steps mentioned above.

Excellent, Drahken! What a great and creative solution. Your suggestion led me to what might be a slightly better one: use Adjust...Hue/Lightness/Separation instead of Adjust...Brightness/Contrast/etc. But what a great idea. Thank you.

Note to Pierre: if objective is filling with ANY color, then a new feature is needed as you generously offered. But if the objective is only white, then Drahken's solution is good enough.

I see that with that method, simply turning lightness all the way up turns the area white. The one drawback to it is that there's no keyboard shortcut to jump to the hue/sat/lightness adjustments (which makes it less convenient if you're doing several such images).

Given that your image contains the background colour of desire, already, you could:

1. Mark the area containing the background colour (could be a very small area, even just 1 pixel)
2. Copy it to the clipboard (Edit > Copy or Ctrl+C)
3.) Mark another area of arbitrary size
4.) Paste the clipboard to the selected area (Edit > Paste or Ctrl+V).

- You can't select any area smaller than 3*3 pixels currently in XnView.
- I requested 2*2, accepted, but not done yet…
