Browser Open, Open all selected... vs corresponding Option

Post by Olivier_G »

In Browser, you can select several files and choose whether you want:
- Open (should open the last selected image only, or the first of selection only?)
- Open all selected
I think it's a good choice: quite flexible and easy to understand.

But what does the Option>General>'Open one view per selected image', then??? (in 1.90Alpha, it's: Options>Open all selected images)
This option should be removed, no?

Last I checked, it worked with Open from program's main window also. It doesn't require browser. So its placement in options was logical in v.1.82.

I just checked and it is also like this in 1.90a3: you've got a point... :P

But is it really useful to select several images with 'Open dialog' when all you want is open just one???
(I could hardly see more need in Browser, except when you didn't want to modify the current selection of files)

Edit1: OK, I see the point with Browser -> whether you want to open all selected images at once, or rather Navigate through them with a special temporary View list. Useful to have both (although I wonder whether it should be available in context Menu only OR in Options only... :? )
Edit2: Found that: just a good example to show that it's complex too understand (Xyzzy got a lot wrong... and I didn't see the temporary navigation list at that time)

Now that it is obvious that:
- 'Open' is to Navigate through selected files in a single View window
- 'Open all selected' is to view all files in their own window at once

I suggest:
- Move 'Open all selected' to first place because it is standard behaviour
...and rename it simply to 'View' (+active when 1 file is selected)
- Rename 'Open' to 'Single view for selection' (+inactive when only 1 file is selected)
- Remove the Option 'Open one view per selected image'

The reason I prefer the context menu to the option, is that after trying this feature, I like it! :D
=> Create several selections of similar images that you 'Open': you will get tabs of similar collections, which is quite useful to compare them within each collection and also against each other! And you can still 'open all selected' a few others when you want.
