B1: A3 preview tab was easier to use.

Post by marsh »

I really liked using the preview tab in Alpha3 which has been replaced with a small secondary divider and arrow. A3 was nice because it preserved the 2 panel layout which I prefer. Beta1 is difficult for me to use.

:) HI B. !

• OMG ! I agree 1,000 times !

- It was more intuitive and simpler !

- I vote in favour of back to the A3-style !

The thread discussed, where Pierre's draft is quite convincing...

I use different layout (#3, no folder tree). I just didn't see the difference in those pictures at the time- I don't know why. :(.

I think the divider add quite more flexibility to users, especially in the Layout used for your Draft. this is also the reason several people supported it in the other thread...

I wonder whether a slight modification may improve it for all users... :?:
=> Claude, marsh: what is your layout? (any screenshot?)

I don't use image preview, but I imagine that layout #3 or #7 may be more problematic.

It sucks

:) Same here, there was too big images and moreover,
because the forum problems and a lot of other tasks, I couln't follow that topic.

 This feature now sucks a lot. If it can't be changed (maybe with an option), I think I'll not use this version anymore, I need a comfortable preview area and a user-friendly interface, like it was in 1.90 A3, I loved it !
NOTE : I use Layout #4 and I don't wish to change.

I don't understand, you can hide tab, and use preview only

Good to know that "Use tabs" will show/hide the whole properties/EXIF/IPTC pane.

Currently we have:
View > Tree pane >
- Show (Shows/Hides pane)
- Use tabs (Shows/Hides tabs)

and

View > Preview Pane:
- Show (Shows/Hides preview)
- Use tabs (Shows/Hides tabs & **Property/Histogram/EXIF/IPTC pane**)

This is confusing. I think we should have:
View > Preview Pane
- Show (Shows/Hides preview)
- Show Properties/EXIF/IPTC (Shows/Hides pane)
- Use tabs (Shows/Hides tabs)

or with sub-submenu

View > Preview Pane
Show
Property Pane >
----- Show
----- Use Tabs

A comparison of 2-panel usage. Not so interesting or informative I guess- but you can see 2 divider bars next to each other in new example.

B1: A3 preview tab was easier to use

I'm only using layout #3, and used to have the preview.
.
I think that if you have a layout - like layout #1 - that let you see both 'areas' (preview and tabs [for properties et.al.]), then the new splitter maybe an advantage. And you are able here to hide/unhide the preview by dblclick in an unused area near the tabs.
.
But if you are using a layout (like #3) that offers you either the preview _or_ the tabs, then the new splitter approachs appears more to be a drawback (more complicated than with the alpha version: for to switch between preview and tabs, you'll have to go the long way via the menu ("use tabs") [no dblclick equivalent].
.
My personal user feedback: i can live with it, but the first thing i do is to reactivate my preview (in decision against the tabs <sigh>).

It is really a difficult task to come with something that satisfy all users:
- the new separation is quite useful to display both Preview and Info at the same time in a flexible manner.
- in some situations (depending on layout/needs), the separation is near useless and tabs are much preferred to access Preview/Info.

Here is the best suggestion I came with:
- all tabs appear at all time on the top of Preview panel.
- when the separation is docked to the left, you access each function by directly clicking its tab like in Alpha.
- when the separation is used, the 'Image preview' is displayed on the left and its tab becomes inactive. You choose Info displayed on the right with other tabs (ie: properties, histogram, exif...).
(visually, the separated layout would not be that far from the first draft made by Pierre, while the non-separated layout would be exactly like Alpha 3)
- in addition, one should be able to orientate the separation in top/down rather than left/right.
- the Preview submenu would be structured exactly like Tree: Show / Use tabs / Item selected (ie: one would be able to hide tabs, select what is displayed with/without separation as for tabs).

What is your opinion on this suggestion?

I disagree, when I first loaded version 1.90 beta 1 it was hard to use yes.
However, I'm now use to the new Preview pane works and have no problems with it - just takes getting use to.

Here's how I'm using the new preview pane fully...

That sounds more usable. Some might want extra tab to disappear though...
