Please put a counter next to category name with number of images in given item and summary number of images in given item and all its children.
Like People (17/170), that means that there are 17 imagess assigned straight to People and 170 images in People category and all categories below.

I find the category counter very useful.
The counter info for all images included in this category plus sub categories sounds a bit sophisticated to me, I'm not sure whether this is really needed. But for more professional use this info surely helps.
Perhaps the info could be (17) and only (17/170) if there are a really sub categories available. As soon as there are sub categories, there could be two numbers. Those users who haven't nested categories will see one number only, other users will see two numbers per category.
Is the second number "170" the total number of images in the current category plus all its subcategories or only the images in the sub categories?
