Improve colours by file type…

Post by Clo »

:) Good morning,

• The original thread is THERE, and unanswered since 2005, June 6th. :|

- I guess it's worth a glance… Please, could you consider an improvement of that locked feature ?
- All TC-users know that I mean ;) TIA !

In TC, you can change default colour for extension??

:) Good afternoon,
In TC, you can change default colour for extension??
• Ho yes ! And that exists for years !
- Like Paul shows above, any colour can be assigned to any file-type at will !
- You can even assign the same colour to two extensions (or more) when needed, i.e. HTM and HTML, TIF and TIFF…
• Just to illustrate the issue in XnView, I think you saw in the original thread that the hard-coded colours are not easy to distinguish, especially with a light-grey background like here on the board.
- Below, that one can get with other BGs :

———— ImageImageImage

• In TC, that function uses the Search features, and XnView has this, has it not ? This is saved in the main INI file as :
[Colors]
ColorFilter1=*.exe
ColorFilter1Color=16711680
ColorFilter2=>files without extensions
ColorFilter2Color=$006FD4
ColorFilter3=*.txt
ColorFilter3Color=4210816
- Please, notice that the inverted hexa colour-code is supported in TC, this is too a missing feature in XnView.
- It's much easier to change colours in this way by hand than to get a headache using the "complements" thingy … ;)
- Files without extension needs an extra section, but I guess this is not really useful for XnView…
• Hoping this could help you to improve the programme,

I believe this is implemented in Beta 5: in the INI file [Browser] here is what I have:

Code: Select all

ColorFilter1=jpeg, 237 237 202
ColorFilter10=psd, 255 255 227
ColorFilter11=pcd, 235 215 235
ColorFilter12=psp, 237 208 163
ColorFilter13=pict, 202 202 255
Claude, can we close this topic?

The opposite!

Post by Clo »

:) Hello !
Claude, can we close this topic?
• No yet, please, because :

1. Pierre has implemented exactly the opposite of that I quoted as a template (the Total Commander system).
- So, he has kept only different backgrounds colours, while that I said in the TC INI are colours for the text !
- This can be seen on the “Paul-Ouistiti”'s capture too…

2. Supposing that we could live with this (adjustable backgrounds, much less easy to spot, since we can't use too dark ones with a single black font colour…), it's buggy.
- I tested a red background for *.png, and I have it too for an *.icl file ! :shock:

  Image

- Moreover, this ICL contains indeed icons only, like it should !

3. I can't get an answer from Pierre about the support of the inverted hexa code - I even requested it again recently elsewhere, nope - that is related to the next point.

4. Personally, that doesn't bore me a lot to change these colours by hand in the INI. Indeed, we will document that in our Manual, since it has a special chapter for this.
- So, whether this feature might stay such as for a certain period, the “Aunty Agatha”s will not use it, I guess…
- Unfortunately, they are the kind of users who needs that the most (old eyes…)
- To have it as complete, we might get a GUI Option, there is a huge free room remaining on the File List Options page…
We could simply choose the colours from the current palette, since now the custom colours are saved !

5. May we add types by hand in the INI ? Important question !

• Don't you think that this might be discussed a bit more ? ;)

Houps, ok. ColorFilter is for text color, not background...
I add BColorFilter for back color
Pierre.

:D

Please, don't forget that we need a configurable single background colour for the lists.
So, the users who prefer dark BG and light colours and those prefering the opposite will be happy !

TIA

Oh yes, there is an option for thumbnails view background, but no option for other views and folder tree.

Is it possible to make a default background color option? There are so many small options and such a basic option is missing.

:) Hello !

• To illustrate the new function as quite accomplished, I spent some hours to draw GUI options,
like I wished to get above (for later, certainly) :

——— Image

• The user can choose to use the colours or not…

• In both cases, s¦he can choose general background and font colours… ;)

• There is indeed a default set of colours in the INI - like currently for the BGs - having a limited amount of file-types.
- So, one can add a new type to the default-set, and also remove one from it.

• It could be possible to load custom sets of predefined colours-filters from extra INI files, let's say like <Colour_filter_1.INI>,
for advanced users able to write such files (not very complicated, though).

• Separately, it could be possible to choose a font-face, font weight, font-size from the small bottom-right section.
- It might be applied in all cases, colours or not.
- This should be useful for those having a lot of files with hyper-long names¦comments, so a narrow¦smaller font helps!

• Indeed, the layout is far to be perfect, I draw all by hand… It's only to show the necessary items, from my point of view…

:) Hello Chris !

• Who knows ? Image

• Waiting for this, anyway there are missing items to use the feature, even changing the values by hand in the INI…
- In example : The grid lines colour…

Perhaps just the single option for background/text color for file list / folder tree could be added in 1.90, it's really a basic option and looks simple, Pierre?

Small sub-suggestion, for format background colors default font color should be used always.

For other Clo's suggestions it's too late IMO.
