Tried installing XnView under Vista 64. After installation and running, Vista closes the app immediately and reports that there was a problem...

Well I run Vista Ultimate x64, with no hardware issues to mention.

I installed XnView 1.82.4 with no errors reported. I succesfully used it, made a few mass operations on files. But I also experienced it crashing.

This is what I got (I use a French-interface Vista) :
Application défaillante xnview.exe, version 1.82.0.0, horodatage 0x44082eb3, module défaillant kernel32.dll, version 6.0.6000.16386, horodatage 0x4549be94, code d’exception 0xc0000005, décalage d’erreur 0x000c2f76, ID du processus 0xcbc, heure de début de l’application 0x01c72cd3f7aeb264.

Using the Microsoft crash report, I obtained this help :
Problème provoqué par Xnview

Ce problème a été provoqué par Xnview. Ce programme a été créé par Xnview. Xnview ne dispose actuellement pas de solution pour le problème que vous avez signalé.

Recommandation

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

La nouvelle version téléchargeable de Xnview peut peut-être résoudre ce problème. Xnview recommande la mise à jour vers la version la plus récente de Xnview afin de bénéficier des améliorations en termes de stabilité et de sécurité.

(which I'm quite sure you already know about, as it seems like written by XnView's author...)

There were no other crashes to report at the same time (XnView did it on its own !).

So I would say there is still a compatibility issue with Vista.

No, it doesn't. I can start XnView and use it normally most of the time. I only had it crash once, and I reported it here as it seems to occur to other people as well.

So try to uncheck option/View/File list/Read ahead

After installing XnView on a german Vista, it doesn't work. It crashes right after the start, without any usefull error information. Is there a known workaround or is it something with my system ?

Vista, AMD64 3200+ (Single Core), Ati Radeon 9500
Rest nothing special.

Do you have tried to uncheck option/View/File list/Read ahead?

Is there a way to set that option without starting XnView ? Since the app closes about 1 second after showing me the tips of the day, I have no possibility to configure the settings within the app.

Find and edit your "xnview.ini", find "ReadAhead" string and put 0 as value.

hm great, I just went to reinstall the progra,, only to find out that now it doesn't crash anymore. The only thing I changed since then, was that I disabled the User Account Control in msconfig. I will try to enable it again, and report back when time permits, probably tomorrow.
And yes, it crashed right after starting it - I saw the tips of the day window, but before I could do anything it just closed with Vista reporting an error.

Crash on Vista

I experience the same problem: XNView crashes right after the Start. But I will check the INI Setting an I will turn UAC off. Then I'll report again.
