Crop does NOT work on some (non-gray ?)

Can't auto-crop this ^^^ image

Have had problems with auto-crop for a long time with various versions,
but now providing a test image. Seems that cropping colours other
than white/gray/black does not work. Cropping this image
(RGB=(100,100,200)) with exactly this colour has exactly NO effect ...
irrespective what "Tolerance" (up to 255) I use

Try batch convert's autocrop function. It is better in some ways. Currently in the viewer, using either white or black plus number will often work (even on your example).
