Why exists "JPEG rotate" and "JPEG lossless r

Post by pstein »

As far as I noticed there is a

rotate (under menu "Image") and a
Lossless rotate (under menu "Tools")

function.

Why are there two rotate functions ?

In other words: Why should I take a not lossless function when I could have a lossless ?

I would suggest to make JPEG rotates ALWAYS lossless and to remove
the explicite "Lossless transformations". The existing of two functions are confusing. Other image processing programs have only ONE (lossless) operation.

If you use rotate button (toolbar), rotate try to use lossless rotation

@xnview:
Sorry I did not understand what you meant with

"If you use rotate button (toolbar), rotate try to use lossless rotation"

@FredJohnC:
The last comment in the thread you mentioned was
from the author Pierre:

"Ok, right" dated Sat Jul 08, 2006

I guess that should mean: "Yes I will implement it (=merge lossless rotate and rotate for JPEGs)"

However now 7-8 month and a couple of xnview releases later the two rotates are still split.
Hence a solution is still pending ?

Am I right ?

In the browser's toolbar, new image rotate buttons can also perform jpeg "lossless" writing with the following setting:
Options... Browser>[Misc]>Rotation>[x]Use Lossless rotation when possible (Jpeg)
When the option is not active, the browser automatically saves Jpeg according to write settings (quality,etc.).
