"Add text" does not add text

- i opened a jpeg image.
- used addtext tool with
text color black
no background
outline is off
--- adding text works..

now turn on background and gray is chosen as color..

--- adding text add only gray area with no text.

now trun on outline with white and turn off background..

-- adding text adds NOTHING..

please confirm this error
