descript.ion files loses their data....

Post by RSC »

When I copy a whole folder called, let's say, NAME to another folder that contains a subfolder called also NAME, the new files are copied to the destination subfolder but original information from the descript.ion file is lost and replaced by info. from the source folder.
I suppose that descript.ion files should be extended with the new records but instead it is probably replaced. At least it behaves like that.
This bug doesn't affect user's pictures but user can easy lost large amount of description information, which makes it a pretty serious bug.

I found another bug, due to which the descriptions are getting lost. When I rename a file in the view mode, its description is not updated, so when I return to the browser mode, its description is not shown anymore.

Yes, right. The folder is copied, so descritp.ion too

I tried to copy a folder with photos to another folder and the original descriptions were lost again. So I guess the error was not solved yet. Is it planned in the future?

Could you tell me how to reproduce it? How do you copy the folder?

I select the folder by left button of mouse from the right part of the Browser window and move it by drug-and-drop to a folder of the same name but different location in the tree-view (in the left part of the Browser view). When I did it this way, original descriptions became blank (ie. the fiel was overwritte). Same fault I reported as months ago.

I tried it again and it really re-writes original description in the destiantion folder by descriptions from the source folder. I am not sure if you do it exactly the same way as I do.

Can you really merge two different folders of the same name by moving one whole folder to another folder (not individual files) without losing descriptions of files that were in the destination folder prior to the operation? If so, could you please describe the way you are doing it?

Sorry but i don't understand.
If you have Folder1/Folder/file.jpg with description file1, and Folder2/Folder/file.jpg with description file2, if you copy Folder from Folder1 into Folder2, description for Folder2/Folder/file.jpg will be file1

Exactly, that is the way it behaves and it is completely incorrect when you start using descriptions and sometimes you need to reorder folders. Immagine how many work will be lost if you put all comments into description and then it is all lost within a second. I think if you used it, you would understand.

Maybe, from theoretical point of view it is fine when you overwrite file2 with file1, but from practical point of view (if you look at descript.ion more as an info associated with photos, not as an independent ordinary file), it would make much more sence if information from file1 would be added to the information already contained in file2.

I hope it is understandable that if I merge files from two different folders of the same name, I do not want to loose half of the descriptions I put there years before...

Please, if you have any further question, I will try to answer best I can. Thank you for your attention.

Yes, many users use this behaviour. So you would like to have for file.jpg "file2 file1" as description?

Dear Pierre,

yes, I think that original descriptions in file 2 should be retained in the new descript.ion file and all new descriptions from file 1 should be added.

If there is some file with the same name, perhaps it should ask to overwrite the old one and depending of it was rewritten or not, the description should be overwritten or not.

Similarly it already works when I copy bunch of files but no folder. Then it is added and works fine:-)

Have a nice day,
