Start mode of XnView

Post by murthy363 »

XnView has a wonderful set of features, but it's layout and other basic issues may need a review.

The default mode of starting is in BASIC mode. This takes about 1 sec on my machine.

By user settings, XnView may be started in the browser mode also. It takes 1 to 3 secs to start in this mode depending on the contents of the folder selected to start with.

As there are no additional facilities available in BASIC mode of start compared to the BROWSER mode of start, I do not understand the advantage user may have in starting in BASIC mode. By selecting the start up directory, user may save those 1 or 2 seconds also.

This may reduce the complexity of XnView. If accepted, XnView will always start in browser mode and I do not foresee any problem. Any other view is welcome.

Yes, xnview starts on browser by default, as the check box is pre-selected. Actually I was not aware of the availability of the feature to start XnView in basic mode till a few days back.

I could not figure out the need for this basic mode. I felt that it was an unnecessary feature only to increase the size of the package.

XnView is a user oriented package, with all user requests receiving due attention. This has probably made XnView develop in some directions while making a few redundant. However, you may decide whether this feaure is still to be retained.

Notwithstanding, I love the features available in XnView and am of the opinion that this will soon match/exceed the superset of features of all other software with similar functionality.

Thanks for the patient reading.

I think the main reason for having this empty mode is so that images can be opened and closed without the impact of opening the browser at all. On a slow system in a large default folder, opening the browser can be a 20+ second delay (mostly attempting to simultaneously load the folder, the cache thumbnails, and allocating the extra memory to hold it all if there's memory pressure). That's extreme, but adding several extra seconds to the load-time of xnview every time when using it purely to open images from explorer gets old, fast.

I don't use it that way, I just know that's one of the use cases it's designed for.
