IPTC Keywords vs. IPTC Categories vs. XnView Categories

Post by joroho »

I'm trying to figure out the best way to organize my files using XnView, but can't figure out all the advantages/disadvantages of doing it with IPTC keywords, IPTC categories, or XnView's own categories (which don't appear to write to the IPTC data).

If using the IPTC categories is the best way, I can't get my brain around using the 3-character categories, supplemental categories, and defined categories lists. I just don't see how this lends itself to a hierarchial structure. I've browsed this forum but can't find anything that addresses it. Some someone please help me?

To start with, IPTC is nice in JPGs, because other programs will also be able to read the data.

And IPTC are stored in file. But perhaps a good enhancement to write IPTC categories like xnview categories....??

That would be really good and for all I know something like this has been discussed before. Storing the category information in the image would make sure that is persistent and never lost unless you loose the images. When moving images on another computer, one could easily restore the categories by reading all the IPTC information.

This is a larger issue which needs a big, conclusive concept, though.

Some related topics (our librarian XnTriq may find more):
- Some ideas about categorizing images
- Shortcut of images to another folder (Categorizing images)
- 'm3u file list support'

Yes, but it only applies on JPGs, since XnView doesn't write IPTC in other formats. So considering that it may not be the ultimate solution. You want to categorize all sorts of images.
