Missing feature?: how to set background colour when editing?

Post by Guest »

I am trying to use the function "edit -> clear" to erase some part of the picture and set it to a uniform white colour. I draw a rectangular selection area to select the area to be erased. I then did an "edit -> clear".
Result: the selected area is filled with solid black colour.
What I need is the cleared area to become white, not black.
I assume this happens because my XnView is currently set with background colour to be black, rather than white.
I searched everywhere for how to set the background colour, unfortunately without success.

Does somebody know where the settings of the colour for the background of the image is located? (I am not talking about the setting in "Tools -> Options... -> View". The setting labeled "Background colour" in this menu is for the area outside of the picture canevas, while what I need is how to set the background colour for the picture itself (i.e. inside of the canevas)).

Thank you,

XnView is more of a viewer/file manager than a editor so it's not really missing anything at all.
You should try PhotoFiltre or The GIMP for what you want.
AMD Ryzen 3 3300X 3.8Ghz, 16Gb DDR4, RX6600XT with Dell U2520D at 2560x1440@60Hz scaling 125%
Win11 x64 24H2, Hard Disk Sentinel Pro, MS PowerToys, Process Lasso Pro and Wintoys

As ckit pointed out, already, XnView can do some image editing, but it's not his strong area at all. There's some workaround, but it's not really good:
1. In the image select an area that has the colour you want as background
2. Choose Edit->Copy (or short cut 'Ctrl+C')
3. Select the area you want to erase
4. Choose Edit->Paste (or short cut 'Ctrl+P')
You can repeast 3. / 4. for all the areas you want to erase.

In various situations (rotation, resize, cutting text, viewing image with transparency, ...) a background colour is needed. Would be good if there was a quick way to set / change it.
