Can xnview generate thumbnails from mpeg 2 files?

Post by ph0b0s321 »

Thanks for creating this brilliant program. I use it both on my desktop and pocketpc. I wanted to confirm though, if Xnview supports making thumbnails of mpeg2 and realmedia files?

Mpeg2 was mentioned as being supported else where in this forum, but I cannot get Xnview to thumbnail any of my mpeg2 files. I normally use powerdvd 7 as my mpeg2 directshow filter for windows media player. But just to make sure I deinstalled and unregistered the powerdvd filters and tried both dscaler and the GPL mpeg1/2 decoder filters. Again both enabled win media player to play the files fine, but xnview would not create a thumbnail for the files. I made sure to delete the cache for the directory I was testing with, each time I change codec.

I am using XP x64 SP2 and xnview v1.91 if that is any help.

Which extension do you have?

Thanks for the reply. The files that xnview is not generating thumbnails for are .mpg, .mpeg and .rm extensions.

Xnview generates thumbnails for some .mpg and .mpeg files and not for others. After checking into it I found that it generated thumbnails for mpeg 1 encoded .mpg and .mpeg files, but not for mpeg 2 encoded .mpg and .mpeg files. Hence my original posted question about movie codec support.

I also tried changing the extension on some of the files to .mp2 and .m2p, but xnview still would not generate any thumbnails for those files....

XnView use DirectX to create thumbnail, do you have a filter for mpeg2?

Install FFDShow and enable MPEG2 support in FFDShow.
You can download FFDShow here - http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/
AMD Ryzen 3 3300X 3.8Ghz, 16Gb DDR4, RX6600XT with Dell U2520D at 2560x1440@60Hz scaling 125%
Win11 x64 24H2, Hard Disk Sentinel Pro, MS PowerToys, Process Lasso Pro and Wintoys

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have used the 3 directshow, directx, codecs for mpeg2 decoding listed in my original post. Normally I use windows media player to tell me if a directx codec is installed, as if not it won't play the file.

Anyway after the last suggestion I got ffdshow. I deinstalled, de-registered all other mpeg2 decoders. To check I tried to open the movies with windows media player, but it would not work.

I then installed ffdshow. I again tried to play the movie with windows media player and it worked. When I look at the 'properties' for the file, windows media player tells me it is using ffdshow. So it looks like were set.

Unfortunately XNview still will not generate thumbnails for the mpeg2 encoded files.

You could try "VirtualDub MPEG2" while waiting for this to be resolved.

The offending files play perfectly in the xnviews preview window, but do nothing if I select view in full screen.

Not easily, but I just downloaded these two files and they behave in the same way, so can be used to test.

http://www.jhepple.com/support/SampleMovies/MPEG-2.mpg
http://www.jhepple.com/SampleMovies/Sta ... PEG-2.mpeg

Again, I have no problem playing these files. And I am not trying to edit them. I am just trying to get Xnview to generate a thumbnail for them the in file browser window with the other types of movies .wmv, .avi and .mov, all of which can be seen as thumbnails without problem.

Thanks.

Also are there any plans to support realmedia / realplayer video's , if not already? Realplayer also uses a directx / directshow filter as well. But I assume XNview does not class .rm files as movie files at the moment. When I select one the, text insided the file comes up in the preview window rather than the video....

I remember that MPEG 2 thumbnails were supported, but there was a strange green effect, I think it was also correct in some old version, not sure if it was a codec, or xnview.

Anyway, what about the TS files? It's also the MPEG2 - with more information (more audio streams, teletext, EPG...), recorded by some DVB players.

RM is a video for XnView, so if you have the DS filter, this must work. But perhaps the same problem as mpg2 that don't support classic way to extract thumbnail...
