Filesize in bytes

Post by Danny »

Short and simple: I would like to have an option to always show a file's size in bytes instead of KB, MB or whatever. I thought someone had already suggested that before but a search didn't bring up useful results so i made this thread.

In order to be able to spot byte-sized differences with one look.

I'd like to refresh this request. Especially since we now have the properties pane (or whatever it's called). Seeing the filesize in KBytes there as well is just wrong and redundant.
Get the bugs fixed, THEN start adding features. It sucks, but someone has to do it.

So an option to show file size in bytes in detail view and properties pane?
Pierre.

That would be great, yes.

IMO the filesize in the properties pane could always be in bytes but that's just me. We already have KB and MB sizes in the status bar and the tooltip.

Great. I'm looking forward to the next version then.

But please use delimiters like 1.000.000 for 1 GB for example. Just having 1000000 is too hard to read IMO.

Actually, I would like it in the status bar more than anywhere else (I exclusively use the status bar to view the name and size and resolution of pictures).

You write decimal…

:) Hello !
…But please use delimiters like 1.000.000 for 1 GB for example. Just having 1000000 is too hard to read IMO.…
- That you write here is right for once, but the programmes don't count as decimal, like you show…
- When Pierre writes Gb, in fact it's GiB
- Hence, when the programme displays 1Gb (wrongly), you will read 2^30 = 1 073 741 824 bytes…

• About a separator, it seems that currently there is none according to the International Norms…
- However, a space only is tolerated to ease the reading, like you point out above.
- The dots are obsolete (in France, for more than 50 years). The “English” comma might be too soon…
- The comma may stands for the decimal part of a number only.
- Indeed, I'm in favour of a (space) separator.

The nail…

Post by Clo »

 Danny

• It was just an opportunity to hammer that nail a bit… :D
- The IEC standard prefixes are already used by some Linux programmes, unambiguous and legal in the U.E.…
- So, why not be a pioneer in that ? It doesn't cost even 0.01 €…

Or just to bend that nail: use a single M or K.
