Hi!
I had problems using XnView 1.91.1 on Vista (Business, 32-bit, german), like others posted here:
http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.p ... ight=vista
The Problem was XnView freezes right after the start. The "Tip of the Day" Window is showing and you can still cancel it. But after that, no matter where you click within the XnView window, it freezes with Vista saying the Program does not respond anymore.
OK, this is what I found out:
- with UAC turned on XnView starts in System32 folder -> freeze
- UAC turned off, it starts in My Documents folder -> no Problem, XnView running fine
- I then changed the startup-folder to C: and reenabled UAC -> no Problem since XnView now starts in C:
- navigating to system32 folder -> freeze
- i then changed the Preview to Pictures only since that's my default configuration. After that navigating to the system 32 folder with XnView doesn't lead to a freeze anymore.
So my conclution ist, there is a non-picture, non-video file or files in the Vista System32 folder that xnView wants to preview (if "All files" is selected for Preview) and then freezes.

Strange, i have no more the crash. Is it possible to find the file that crash xnview?Zefiris wrote:Yes I checked it, its 1.91.1
After I read the post about problems wit Vista and your comment, that you fixed it in 1.91.1, I checked if I accidently might have installed an older version. But the about-info clearly says 1.91.1.
Pierre.
I disabled everything instead of "Show item in view 'Thumbnails'" - "Images"
The following Files are somehow recognized as images.
These are all the ico, scr, sys, cat, dat, cpi, tsk, mod files in System32 no file is missing.
The "ssBranded.scr" file doesn't show any Icon. (It has a DirectX-Icon in Explorer)

Two other things:
I accidentally clicked on the Windows\Cursors folder and found out, that XnView stops previewing
the cursors with "aero_arrow.cur", meaning up to "3dwwe.cur" the cursor previews ar showing.
XnView freezes like with the System32 folder.
Every time i click on a folder in the tree-view the folder icon of the previous
selected folder changes from the standard yellow folder icon to the standard file
icon (the white empty piece of paper)
I hope this helps,

Ok, I know what caused the problems. It was SageThumbs, a Shell Extension like the XnView shell extension for adding a Thumbnail into the Explorer kontext-menue. It seems to have problems with Vista in general. After uninstalling SageThumbs everything was fine, no more freezes!
But there ist still the problem with the changing icons in Tree-View, but I'll make a new thread for that...
