OK. Suppose I have displayed a full screen of thumbnails. I select a thumbnail and want to assign it to a category. How to do that without showing the Categories sidebar?
There is no main menu or context menu item to assign a thumb to a category. The only way I can see to do it is to drag the thumb to the category, which of course presupposes that the category sidebar is visible.
XnView needs the following "central" command, usable in the toolbar, context menu (where appropriate), and Tools menu:
cmd_AssignCategory
This command would display a dialog of the Categories sidebar. Each category would have a check box so I could assign images to multiple categories in one action.
This seems absolutely essential to me and should have high priority for inclusion in the next version.
(or am I missing something already available...?)

An alternative to drag and drop sounds useful, and your proposal is comprehensive.
A dialog with checkboxes, [Add] & [Close], as I understand it, would nicely avoid the problem of defining shortcut keys for a flexible (and lengthy) list.
Nightflyer has recently posted about categories searching here. Maybe you could take a look and see how it relates- it could belong in such a dialog.

Re: How to assign categories

Re: How to assign categories
Sorry for the late reply. What exactly do you mean - a shortcut to open the dialog, or open/close dialog for categories & color label?xnview wrote:Do you have an idea of hotkey for this dialog? (Dreamer)
Not many good shortcuts are free, perhaps:
Ctrl+Alt+C
Ctrl+` (next to 1*)
* - I think Tobi is right, Numpad shortcuts should be changed, so this shortcut would be convenient.
Another issue - shortcuts in the browser and viewer are different (Ctrl+Numpad numbers) - it's confusing.
Ctrl+0-5 and Ctrl+Alt+0-5 seem to be free, if you'd change it, then you could add these shortcuts also to viewer and the viewer's Brightness/Contrast /Gamma shortcuts to Browser (but this is not so important - if not possible).

What about the Category / Rating / Color Label buttons for the browser mini-toolbar?xnview wrote:Yes right, i must add 'Set categories & color label' everywhere!
